“Help me understand” is a powerful phrase. Instead of discounting people’s thoughts and opinions outright, help them see the inconsistencies in their logic by requiring them to spell it out more clearly to you. Then it becomes less about who is right and wrong, and more about building collective understanding. It protects against the human desire to be right and win conflicts, and potential for the person making the straw man argument to shut down.

I like to begin with - "Here's my understanding" and focus only on my point of view, without comparing and contrasting or even mentioning the straw dog points. Comparing and contrasting provides them more credibility than perhaps they deserve. Even if I agree with a portion, I don't acknowledge, just restate it as part of my point of view.

The undercurrent of most every disagreement comes from a place of deep misunderstanding. A good way to diffuse a straw man argument is to first, analyze what beliefs, factual evidence, or perspectives may have led to their opinion; secondly, empathize with the journey they took to come to those conclusions; and lastly, raise questions that challenge their way of thinking on the subject. It is more important to guide others to see the logic than to disregard their convictions. There is a stark difference between disagreement and challenge. When we challenge someone to see a subject from a different perception, this can open pathways for new avenues of thought. Contrastly, a challenge presented to ourselves offers an opportunity for growth.

This a minor point, however I propose using the term 'straw dog' instead of 'straw man,' as it promotes gender neutrality. Though the original term may stem from scarecrows, which were often fashioned to resemble men, it's worth considering this alternative to foster a more inclusive dialogue.
