Take heed of my significant failures in this area if you're just starting out. Do not do what I did which was be afraid to "bother" people I had worked with on other jobs to see what they had going on. I spent 6 years languishing in Los Angeles largely because I was afraid of reaching out to prior colleagues. Ask questions, keep in touch, take someone out for coffee or lunch. Keep the communication lines open. I was so bad at this for so long.
