How can you build trust with your team members in a remote learning environment?

When establishing expectations, consider leaving some time to define team values that you can "rally around." They can be based on your company values, or they can be totally unique to your team. For example, I once led a team within a company where "excellence" was one of the values. We decided that our team version of this value would be "do the work, and do it good." Obviously, this was not grammatically correct, but it gave us something to rally around and laugh about as a team, even when the work was tough.

If you remove the "exclusiveness" or the distinction between the "in-office" or "in-seat" learner versus "remote" learners and operate with a remote-first approach, all will benefit. Design for differentiation, nuance, and accessibility. It benefits everyone, not just one population. That also requires leaders to abide by, model, and perform the same expectations. If you want an update on a deliverable or a milestone, you have to model your own remote updates to show others what accountability and mutual respect looks like.

Clarity is the currency in today’s VUCA world. Team especially in the virtual world need complete information about the leadership vision and objectives. This gives them both confidence to run their projects and freedom to start new initiatives.

Communication is a key and communicating effectively is an art. Leaders can inform team members about ongoing projects, adaptations, and updates. It is important to understand that regular communication helps to create transparency and build trust.

Ensuring that documentation is accessible (both findable but able to be understood easily) is another critical aspect of effective communication. Don't rely on the one-off conversations, chats, or in-the-moment meetings. Follow up with documented summaries, action items, and risks. Get disciplined about it and your teams will not only thrive but build a culture of clear communication, at scale.
