How can you build trust with a risk-averse person?

Given that my profession as a lawyer is usually based on being a risk-averse person, I can proudly say that I can connect with any risk averse person whether as a colleague, client or counter party. To build trust with a risk-averse person requires great efforts to understand his perspectives and areas of concern and to start securing and peeling them one by one to reach the goal. Once the person feels that you understood his concerns and took them into your consideration you will both start to connect for finding solutions together. This connection will be the first step to win the person.

From a health and safety perspective my usual problem is persuading people not to dive head first in to meat grinders. Building trust with a risk averse person in my arena is usually down to listening to their concerns and, where possible, accommodating them. Showing some empathy and understanding (listening to people) goes a long way towards gaining trust. Well, that and buy them a cofffee and talk it through.

While it is true that you need to understand where the other person is coming from, it is equally important for your risk owner to know where you are coming from. Trust is built when your risk owner understands why you want to know about thier risks, when building the relationship I always open with what I want to get out of the relationship usually positioned as a proportionate understanding of the risk so that I can ensure the Board understands the exposure in the context of the broader business and can provide the risk owner with the appropriate support and resources to manage the risk.

Strong communication and empathy are prerequisites in a risk-averse environment. Mngrs invest a lot of effort and time building trust in their teams: both establishing trust in their employees and ensuring that their employees trust them in return. Employees who do feel trusted are higher performers and exert extra effort, going above and beyond role expectations. In short, trust begets trust. Learn to read their trust levels by understanding the risks and vulnerabilities they face. Are they risk-tolerant? The onus to grow mutual trust is on the manager, not only cultivating employees’ trust, but conveying prudent, incremental trust in them. Managers need to adequately scope assignments, grant resource authority, and not undermine it later.

It could not be more true that you need to appreciate the risk owners strengths and contributions. Rare is the occasion I have captured and presented an analysis of a risk without the collaborative consent of the risk owner. They are the experts in the detail build trust by helping them frame thier concerns using the company's risk language, scoring criteria and showing them how it relates to the company risk appetite.

One thing I found helpful during my experience with all kind of personalities, that you shouldn't pressure and force humans connecting together, most of the times comes off as a bad decision.

Respect their boundaries by being mindful of their comfort zones. For example, if they prefer planning activities in advance, avoid impromptu or spontaneous surprises. Show that you understand and appreciate their need for predictability, strengthen trust by acknowledging and respecting their boundaries consistently.

One thing I’ve found helpful in these situations is being mindful of their autonomy and reading body language when speaking to them. Ask plenty of questions and be sure to pay close attention to their responses. That way there is no room for confusion or disrespecting their boundaries.

Having the knowledge on your side is possibly the best way to gain somebody's trust. Being confident in your perspective and delivering the rational can be the key to be successful.

In my experience you gain the most trust when your risk owners can see the outcome of your engagement. If you can demonstrate to them how their views and opinions effect the decision making within the business you gain their trust. Show them how thier opinions influence the board, either through (in FS anyway) changes in regulatory capital or allocation of resources and you empower the risk owner to recognise how important thier contribution is which has the side effect of making them think strategically about their exposures.

Demonstrate understanding and address concerns in a simple, but practical way. For instance in terms of using a new software., show examples of other businesses using it without issue, suggest a trial period with minimal investment, so the person can see and engage the idea of its benefits firsthand before making a conscious decision to fully commit.

With a risk averse person, concrete evidence is one of the best things you can offer them. From my experience they have a fear of loss or failure and providing evidence to the contrary will definitely help garner their trust and assist with building rapport with them. Which can only lead to success.

I mentioned in an earlier response how important it is to have the risk owners agreement in your analysis of risk, but it remains the case that risk managers have the responsibility to disagree with risk owners. I would feel that I have failed in my role if I couldn't get a risk owner to agree with my assessment of their risk as I should be able to make my case in a credible way. However I always state to risk owners that I reserve the right to hold and report a different view to them. It may seem counter intuitive to say but to build trust a risk owner needs to know you are confident enough to challenge their view.

We worked on a project for a client where the goal was to introduce more successful innovative thinking into the business in an culture that was traditionally risk adverse. This was driven by a need to deliver the strategy. A key instrument we used was understanding the behaviour drivers of innovation and successful risk. This was curiosity, creativity, infallibility, collaboration. We then designed interventions to bring those behaviours into the business from teaching leaders how to bring these behaviours into their approach, ideation workshops, stories of collaboration and collaboration tools to make it easier for employees to co-create.

I completely agree with this notion as well. Involving them in the process helps ease their apprehension and gives them a sense of control over their wellbeing, which will make their aversion to risk slightly less for the moment.

I have found that risk reviews are better described as risk surgeries and a good risk manager understands the risk owner on both a personal and professional level. You must of course balance this relationship, but taking time to ask your risk owner what is going on in their life can help the risk manager understand their motivation and reasons for their views on risk analysis. Asking your risk owner to disregard the numbers and red MI and tell you what is keeping them awake at night will provide you with a deeper insight into the risk owners exposures, often those discussions lead to a healthy conversation on influencing factors that can include persoal matters. When a risk owner knows you understand their challenges you build trust.

I believe that one of the major reason why a person becomes risk averse is because they do not like uncertainty. This is a very innate nature of humans to be as safe as possible both mentally and physically. Having said that had there been no risk takers we would have never come out of the caves. In order to build a connection with people who do not like uncertainty, what has worked for me is being able to make them visualize very distinctly what is means to take risk. Your job is to define very discretely what steps and calculations are usually taken into the decision making of taking a risk. Once you help them visualize and understand that risk taking is not based on fluke or guessing they would be able to relate to you better.

In additional to the other insights that have been shared, I think it is crucial to create an environment where the risk-adverse person knows they can trust you, that you are consistent, that you are willing to really listen to concerns, and that you can be flexible when/if needed and appropriate. Trust is something earned through consistent actions and behaviors.

Building trust with a risk-averse individual involves incremental steps, and while the above is true, it is equally important to forge trust with the person by understanding their perspective deeply, acknowledging their concerns, and co-creating a tailored approach that combines their cautious nature with gradual exposure to calculated risks, while highlighting the potential for learning and growth in a safe, supported environment.

Stay connected, address concerns, and provide ongoing support. Keep them updated and actively listen. Meet their expectations while also demonstrating reliability, and prioritize their needs for a strong, enduring relationship.
