Empower photographers! The only way to empower a community it to do it actively - therefore you should empower talent with equipment and opportunities.

I do graduating senior portraits for a local high school for students needing professional photographer access. I'll shoot about 45 kids in a day. The purpose is for the students to have a professional headshot for the yearbook and a great portrait of themselves.

The type of photography I specialize in and enjoy the most pushes the limits of my clients imaginations as well as my own. I aim to create images that are out of the ordinary, with photo composition that can transport my clients to any world they imagine!

Know your worth and do your research. You can't be a beginning photographer and charging 1000's of dollars. What makes your work stand out from other photographers. How I determine my prices is by my location and what I am offering. I usually book the studio and how far I have to travel to people. I also look at what all that is that I'm offering. Are these just headshot photos or will there be more people involved in the shoot. There's so many things that you must take into consideration when it comes to having a photography business.

It's not so much about 'price' as value. If people bought everything on price there would be no need for Rolex, Rolls Royce or Ralph Lauren. Build value in what you do, how you talk about it, your visual brand and your online comms. Be very clear about your audience and your offer. Once aligned the two will be an obvious match.

Know your cost of doing business first and keep adjusting that as time passes and your business evolves. Include in that cost your salary, savings, everything. That’s going to be your target. Say that you’re happy with $100k/yr (just an example). Now you can go the route of setting a target #shoot days/yr. Say you want/can shoot 100 days/yr. That means you need to make $1000/shoot on average in order to hit your $100k target. Now you can play with those two variables (shoot days and daily rate) and look at different scenarios. You’ll get a sense for where you need to be price wise at a minimum. You could hit your target with 100 clients shooting once a year, 50 clients shooting twice a year, and so on. Hope this helps!

It may sound cheesy, but try to always have your instagram feed filled with your latest work AND the work you want to be hired for. A 50/50 split usually works well. Every client, no matter whether they are your target audience or not, will check your IG when researching you and will consider hiring you or not based on what they see there. Even if you don’t think you’ll get clients via IG, rest assured – people will go there for research! Finally, only put your very best work on display!

Every artist has a brand and what they are known for. How I showcase my testimonies and my portfolio is on my website. I love to photograph people of color because there aren't many photographers that know how to photographer different skin tones. My work showcases that and the authentic sides of people.

In the modern era you cannot do anything without a brand, but I don't mean try and create Rolex! Your personal brand stands for far more. Be you, be authentic and be visible. Create content for social media taking about the stories around your work and your customers, not you. That will then create your personal brand. Think about your look; there's no problem creating a style that shows who you are. I know a personal chauffeur - he never goes networking without a suit and tie. Even in summer! Teach photography workshops at high schools, seniors centres etc. Offer free headshots to people who been laid off recently to help them find new work. Put on your thinking cap and find local initiatives that resonate with your business.

One way that we give back is to donate a headshot station at an association event and we choose a charity to donate to. All headshot participants donate as we raise money for that charity.

Giving back to your community is an essential quality that we need to nurture. I volunteer in my local community and a volunteer agency, offering my time and skills. I often volunteer to cover social events organized by credible volunteer agencies. I create photos for non-profits and fair trade stores to assist them in achieving their missions and goals. Although there may be little or no payment involved, I am building an excellent network of people, and participating in activities that are important to me. It is important to always scrutinise yourself and check your work and review negative feedback. It is also important to let go of some partners or customers, even if it is painful. This was an important realisation, but it applies to all relationships in life. And to consistently deliver quality. Don't get weaker or slacker because it's the tenth job for a customer and you're too sure of yourself.

Feedback is so important. We live in a world that expects all feedback to be 5 stars or else it's bad and I don't subscribe to that. Clients should not be made to feel like they can not openly express their experience if it leaves them unsatisfied. As much as it stings as a creative and passionate person we photographers are, all feedback is important to take in and learn from. No one can please everyone while still being authentic to their brand and mission.

Trust your instincts, it's so easy to be run over when you don't-- especially if you are just building your business. If you know you are not the right fit for a job or their budget does not fit your price point, it's ok to turn the job down. I have been doing photography professionally for 23 years and can say without a doubt, that when I have gone against my gut or tried to make my work fit what someone else wanted, it has ALWAYS been more of a headache than anything and regret is often what you're left with.
