Even though consultants are thought as Jack of all trades, however the reality is most the firms are moving away from generic to functional specialized consultant model i.e. each consultant is building their niche. A good consultant must have 3 essential skills - domain knowledge, ability to tell great stories and back that story with beautiful presentations and supporting data/evidences. Once you have all these flavours in your corporate personality, you will be confident Consultant. That is what matters most. Honestly, ask any implementation guy, 80% of the recommendations of Strategy Consultants are not implementable. That's why speaking with conviction matters a lot. You need to be always self aware. To me it means that as a consultant you always have to provide value and original information. Too many times I heard clients complaining that the consultant delivered information that they already knew, just in a different format.

Signed a contract and get paid up front the due portion. DO NOT take anyone’s word, check in the mail, bank issues, etc. I’ve heard it all and take this as the best piece of advice. Humans instinctively want things for free. Final raw files sent when final payment in the bank. TRUST ME 3. Do more than is expected as an investment in your brand and business. When completed ask for a review on LinkedIn / Google etc. your track record is your gold bullion index. Be on time, prepared and nice ??

As the worlds move from process excellence to technology leverage, you need to pick up the trend, tools and become the thought leader before your client do. Not only learning new stuffs is sufficient. Using the knowledge, to build more integrated client usable and implementable use cases are the next step in this journey. For example if you are in Fintech you need to learn product management, finance, risk, regulations and analytics all together in a rapid speed. Sometimes, it is not that easy, require extra effort

Honesty is such a key part of the consultant journey. That vulnerability and a desire to keep learning will endear you to many. So often there can be a veneer that the consultant must know all. Here's the reality - you were given an opportunity as a specialist, now use it! I find that my honesty about what I am good at, and what I'm not has built tremendous relational equity with my partners - equity that has turned into referrals and opportunities. The more our desire to learn, grow and be honest in the process - the greater our overall impact.

Business leverage comes from capital, people, and products with no marginal cost of replication, such as code and media. 2. Code and media offer permissionless leverage. You can create software and media that work for you while you sleep. 3. If you can't code, consider writing books and blogs, or recording videos and podcasts. However, code is the most powerful form of leverage you should consider to master. 4. Therefore, learning how to build with code and media and combining those skills with sales will make you unstoppable.

A feedback loop is crucial. Never miss an opportunity to invite feedback and an outside perspective into what you're doing. Landed a new client? Ask them why they agreed. Finished a project? Ask them for feedback on what you brought to the table. Honest self-assessment through continuous feedback is a catalyst for sustained growth.

Don't just ask for feedback in general (e.g. "What do you think of the service/final product?") - ask for specific feedback: A few examples: - How did you perceive the communication in this project? Too pushy, too lax? Would you have rather enjoyed in-person meetings instead of zoom calls and e-mails? - What specifically about my services would you recommend to a colleague or friend? What wouldn't you recommend (and why?) - What opportunities do you see on how I could have provided an even better experience for you next time we work together? - What's needed in your opinion to build this one-time project into a long-lasting business relationship?

Asking is the best way to sell and nurture your skills and reputation as a consultant! When you ask, you can improve your service or product. When you ask, you empathize with the people you are helping through your business endeavors. When you ask, you are shining a light on the problems you need to solve. Just listen carefully and read between the lines to find the best puzzle piece that you can integrate into your core offer.

As a consultant you better be authentic and understand why you are doing it. if you have ever been a entrepreneur, never walked in the shoes and understand the struggles that come with it, are you eligible to help them? IMO if you are a entrepreneur and are reading this try to work with someone that understands these struggles. They are unique.

In the beginning, it’s definitely three and four it’s about networking and collaborating, and always learning. As you become more experienced then you start defining your niche.
