Implementing this approach ensures you're filling positions and building a team united by a common purpose. Engage potential hires with your vision and demonstrate how their roles contribute to the bigger picture, making them feel valued and part of something significant from day one.

There is one core thing you need to define first: VALUES. And when I say it - I really mean it. Values that represent what is important for each and every team member, across the whole vertical. Here's a brilliant comment by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos: “Many companies have core values, but they don’t really commit to them. They usually sound more like something you’d read in a press release. Maybe you learn about them on day one of orientation, but after that, it’s just a meaningless plaque on the wall of the lobby.” If it's about you - there's no culture in your company. Values are something that lays on the back of the head of every part of your team. You don't need to study them, they are programmed in your personality.

I feel like the answers don't get to the root of the question. You can say it's the type of people? But how will you know, this can become subjective rapidly. Tools, messages, comms, assessments etc. are all valuable, but surely deep alignment of values is key. What is required, then, is a set of values that actually determine behaviours, decision-making, ways of working, and even business models. Too many companies write these on the wall and then don't operate by them, especially through the behaviour of leaders. If you can get people on board who feel a strong affinity to, and are excited by, the values of the org you will all be playing by the same rules, making it much easier to head in the same direction.

A strong company culture start by the kind of people you hire with. For me personally, it's about hiring high integrity individuals with solid work ethic. If an organisation is full with such people, anyone not meeting those standards will automatically stand out.

You or people on your team will be working with this person for hours, weeks, months, if not, years, so having shared values, practices and culture is important for a smooth, long-term, enjoyable experience not just for you, but for them. There are various behavioural questions or aptitude tests you can Google to learn more about a person, but it's important to take that into account because it's something that's a little harder to teach than how to format a spreadsheet.

Not to use the family analogy, however hiring someone new to the company is like someone marrying into the family. This should not be a solo effort, rather involving everyone in the family to give their opinion, meet the new person, evaluate their fit and qualifications, and discuss it internally. Everyone will have a different perspective and sometimes a more objective approach will come from someone not that invested in this new person coming through the door. So, it's important to involve your team (family) when a new hire (person) is coming onboard (marrying in).

This is probably the most important step because this is their first impression. The amount of times colleagues would recall their first day of onboarding and how impactful it was setting the stage for the rest of their time at the company was eye opening. Being engaging with them, supporting their individual needs, being organized in your approach to training them and asking them their feedback for the next new hire are all important for a great onboarding experience.

Could have probably put this in other sections, but I strongly recommend (especially in a young and growing entrepreneurial business) to include your team in the recruitment process. Not just the hiring managers but a cross section of team members. Let your short-listed candidates meet the team - with you or your managers present. It allows your team to assess whether the candidate will 'fit' with your culture. It allows the candidate to also decide if they think that they will fit. If you have to re-hire it is said on average to cost 9-months salary (recruitment fees, training fees/time etc.) so you want to get it right, and that is a two-way street.

Here's what else to consider...during the interview process it probably a good idea to have a open discussion about expectations, limitations, attitude and opinions. with that you can find if the candidate a good fit.
