It shapes your research trajectory and the network you build around it. As a new professional, your niche doesn't just define what you research, it defines who you connect with and how you grow.

Target your research. Be specific in your goals. I have a large library and invest in books that either deal with my area of research or have bibliographies that will lead me to other sources I need. Then search those sources on the topic and their authors. From there, you can contact the professor or author. But one caveat: Do not rely on the Internet alone to achieve your goals. That's okay, as new discoveries do not necessarily have history data, you can work and build on your own data, it will be difficult but worth pursuing if you have time and resources. Why people generally rely on data is because they have some evidence to satisfy their research curiosity that keeps them from diving with evidence-based approaches. On the other hand, if you do not have data, it comes to your motivation and passion for the niche topic that drives your present and future research. Just be bold and wise.

When you define your research niche, it is good if you prepare some kind of research resume, to show and tell somethimg about your research experience and background, and also some kind of research proposal of what actually you would like to research. After doing it that, it will be much easier to find the relevant stakeholders, that you can step in contact with, and could be helpful for your research. It will be also easier for the stakeholders, that you contact, to know, how could they be involved in your research or how could you be included in their research projects.
