I believe in mentoring young people entering the field with or without a college degree. I have meet many kids with HS and Military System Training in CS, Elex, Mech/Hydraulic weapons systems that understand how it works but have no experience in the discipline of SE but with their technical experience would benefit the SE discipline where a college isn’t needed. They need to be taught about EIA Stds such as 632, 649, 12207, ISO 9001 etc to understand why/how company policy and procedures are written & used to design, develop and maintain any system. I am helping a young man now who is working as a bartender going to college (nights) for a CS degree. He has not been taught EIA STDS in any of his college Eng/SW classes. I was stunned.

To build relationships in systems engineering when you're new, start by actively participating in industry events, forums, and social media groups. Seek mentorship from experienced professionals and attend networking events to connect with peers. Additionally, engage in collaborative projects, share your insights, and demonstrate a willingness to learn. Building a strong network takes time, so be patient, genuine, and proactive in your efforts.

I would say the systems engineering community is still niche and well connected across the globe.First thing to do as a new system engineer would be to enroll yourself as an INCOSE member and participate in the working groups and discussions.In my experience, attending the INCOSE Conferences have enabled me to widen my network of Systems engineers from different parts of the world as well as different domains and applications.The Systems Engineering groups on LinkedIn is an amazing mode to collaborate, discuss and share ideas/opinions/learning with the wider community.Also connecting with the fellow systems engineers on LinkedIn will help you learn, widen your knowledge and will keep you updated with the state of the art ideas around SE.

Even after meeting up with other professionals, you have to stay in touch with them as Lack of COMMUNICATION kills Great relationships. Make regular contact with your peers, show them that you are interested in the field and willing to provide value which can help them in return.

Some things to consider, since I was in that position at the beggining of my journey as an Engineer, is to reflect a little and ask yourself if you are commited to go on that specific path. System Engineering is huge so finding yourself on the right path is important. Adding to this I consider also to find a mentor, a Senior Engineer, who can guide you. Give importance to communication, transparency and trust. Think outside the box and be proactive.

I like the find advice to find a mentor. That is excellent! I would add—develop a sense of awareness to identify things that need to be done (gaps) and fill them. If it needs doing, do it and do it well. Additionally, treat everyone as important— from the janitor, the one who makes coffee or brings donuts, to the chief and all in-between. You are ALL important.
