In most cases, I've found critics basically wanting to be heard. This approach fosters respect and opens an avenue for an honest rebuttal, if necessary, or at least a mutual agreement to voice disagreement, that is, agree to disagree..

I've found being intentionally proactive about stakeholders relationship is not only critical but it's what sets you up as that much-needed collaborator. Handling stakeholders issues from a reactive stance is a recipe for being left out of many critical issues and the eventual missing a seat in the C-Suite.

Ask questions - try to get to the core issues, to see things from their perspective. Only when they feel fully heard should you start to respond, with honesty, compassion and humility.
