The content nowadays is vast, but a good tip is to search for good cyber courses on Udemy, follow the author on LinkedIn, and understand the communities in which he participates. It's a way to stay up to date. GitHub is also an excellent source of information, but you need to search for the right words. Last but most importantly, use LinkedIn to learn how to follow the right people and share knowledge.

I do not maintain social media accounts typically. But I would like to add that the value of Twitter (“X”) in cybersecurity cannot be overlooked. It’s the one platform I maintain an account on and it’s one of the leading communities for breaking news, conversation, and most importantly networking. I have made many friends and connections on Twitter just through being involved in the same conversations or replying to some of my favorite cybersecurity accounts. There may be fragments all over, but a large majority of the cybersecurity community congregates on X.

The tip here is the Bside events, which are cheap events, and they exist all over the world with a focus on hacktivism and technology; in addition to being affordable, they tend to have a good number of people. There are thousands of online events; the most important thing is participating and interacting.

Indeed, joining online communities focused on cybersecurity is an excellent way to connect with professionals worldwide. You can participate in forums, groups, blogs, podcasts, webinars, and virtual events to learn, share insights, and showcase your skills. These platforms provide valuable networking opportunities, especially for individuals in economically disadvantaged countries, as virtual events eliminate the need for costly travel or trading with experts. Additionally, the shift to online events due to COVID-19 has made cybersecurity knowledge more accessible, with a significant number of events being held virtually.

The world has narrowed down and finally become a click away and small village around the corner, thanks to remote connectivity. And most of us have the freedom and privilege of attending virtual or in-person events of our choices hosted anywhere. This is significantly huge, highly imperative and helps us to learn from each other and share insights. Furthermore, we can use these pervasive events to nurture and leverage our knowledge and skillsets in our respective profession, and more specifically in cybersecurity. And we can hone in on these huge potential resources live or on-demand and sharpen our saw depending on our learning styles.

Most major metropolitan or suburban areas have a DEFCON or Bsides group that meets monthly. These meetings typically have some kind of teaching element to them each month and are a great way to meet fellow like minded people right in your area. The idea of attending an in person event like this for the first time can be intimidating but be assured, after having attended several across the country, these groups are incredibly welcoming and you’ll fit right in.

It’s important to remember that the cybersecurity field is very broad. You have pentesters, compliance experts, advisors, social engineers and many more. Knowing this, you can be sure that within your immediate network there is someone who is connected to the industry. My main advice would be to let everyone know what you are working towards including online acquaintances. Your network extends further than you think but you can’t take advantage of it if you don’t share your interest.

This is part and parcel of the very pledge we all entered into to advance the profession through learning and/or teaching. As ethical cybersecurity professionals, we must verify and ensure that whatever we do should have value for individuals, organization or society at large.

Create events and situations to help others nowadays; sharing good is the key to success. Make this chain spin; we will not just consume good content, but we have to be responsible for creating it. Create publication goals and generate topics to be debated; this is a way of attracting people instead of just looking for them.

I totally agree, it's important to provide value and support to your contacts. Show genuine interest in their success and well-being. Share useful resources and opportunities, offer feedback and assistance, show appreciation and recognition, be a good listener, and seek collaborations that benefit both parties. Building strong relationships through these actions creates trust and mutual growth . In addition, help fresh graduates and spread security awareness. Support new graduates in their career journey and educate others about cybersecurity for a safer digital environment.

One thing you need to know in the cybersecurity space is just how much people do genuinely value your opinion. Do not be afraid to speak to or write to something that’s already been said a hundred times by others. Especially for those who are entertaining starting a blog. Something may have been stated a hundred times but never in your way from your perspective. I have tried learning concepts in cybersecurity for months only to read a blog by somebody who said the same thing in a different way and it finally clicked for me. Not only does sharing provide value, but it also helps demonstrate that you’re a member of the community and contributing to helping us all, including yourself, get better.

I do not belong in cybersecurity. I have no college and no certifications. I am entirely self taught and I worked hard to get where I am. I now have an established career and network in cybersecurity and never imagined I’d be where I am today. Somebody took a chance on me and ever since then I have been continuing to grow and excel. It’s not an easy path into this field, and there’s no straight line for how to make it in, but if this is what you’re passionate about, no matter what stands in your way, continue to pursue it. If a guy like me can have a successful career here, so can you.

The most important thing is that it may not have been mentioned above. Still, in addition to everything said above, I recommend a good security professional to attend developer, cloud, infrastructure and database events and not only security, as there is a lot of synergy and knowledge to be collected in these areas related to security.
