Traits like introversion/extroversion, intuition/sensing, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving, as in MBTI’s 16 types (e.g., ISTJ or ENFP). Online tests can help, but they’re not definitive. Personality is complex and dynamic, influenced by various factors and personal growth. Use these assessments as a starting point but be aware of their limitations and the need for deeper exploration of individual traits.

This is a slippery slope and we run the risk of labeling. No one wants to be labeled. Focusing on what one values and seeking to align around those values is closer to the root of what it means to be seen and, well, valued.

Striking the balance between brainstorming and write storming as a way of including diverse thinking styles. If you can understand first the culture within which you are needing to work you can then understand individual culture of the people you are seeking to engage. Taking this time to understand your audience, their culture, and personality will allow you to add value in the best possible way. Remember culture eats strategy for breakfast!

Leaders today can benefit from practicing active listening skills. Tune out distractions. Focus on the person in front of you (IRL or digitally). Tune into their message and ideas without thinking of what you'll say next. This will help you connect and build trust. In order to get into this place of calm focused communication, I teach my clients centering practices and easy techniques to stay present and in the moment.

Motivation is not a one-size-fits-all phenomenon. To motivate someone, it is so important to understand what motivates them, what drives them, what pushes them to break their patterns. Knowing their personality type is a great step in that direction. Someone is motivated by financial growth, while others are motivated by frequent validation, while someone else is inspired only by someone who has had an inspiring journey of their own. You can not motivate someone and bring real change without understanding who they really are.

I get motivated with spirituality/empathy, but that is not the case with everyone else. It changes person to person and to motivate someone one must understand their Point Of Action/Trigger. Once you know what kind of trigger is required for any given personality you start working in that direction. You strategise accordingly. Tailored specifically for each individual. 1 suit for all occasions, dosen't fit here. Know your audience, know their pain point, know their trigger and you are good to make a strategy to motivate.

In this case, strategy, understanding and clarity is essential because, what motivates Person A may be totally repulsive to Person B. So, understanding the personality types, needs, passions, drives and what gives team members a sense of fulfillment will go a long way in determining the best form of motivation.

Values reveal our motivations. Our values are the code by which we operate, give clarity in what we do, how we act, and underpin the decisions we make.

There is no single formula to influence different personality types. One of the key tips to influence any personality type is to "Listen". Do not just hear what they say listen very deeply with genuine curiosity. With deep listening, you would know what personality the person is, what the words they chose while speaking to you, what actions they were making and watch for their behaviour while they speak to you. When you respond back to them during the conversation, use them wisely so that you connect to the person first. The moment, you connect well with a person, they will listen to you and you can have a great conversation to influence them. Primarily, it should be a coaching conversation which should influence them to decision-making.

Influencing happens via alignment of shared values, shared outcomes and shared responsibilities. To approach influencing from the social self is a limiting path.

Many years ago, while undertaking experiential leadership training, I chose the person I thought was least like myself to be my 'reflective partner'. I could have chosen someone I felt comfortable with but instead I chose the person who I thought I'd be least comfortable with. I'm so glad I did. Through the reflective process, I learned to understand someone very different from myself, the strengthens in these differences, and our similarities and points of empathy. From this experience, I learned how to embrace difference in other people for my own personal growth, for mutual benefit, and for better work-related outcomes.

Active listening is the key to strong relations. When thinking of relationship skills, one must audit one's active listening abilities. The easiest way to do that is by engaging in active listening exercises in a group setting. The game of telephone is my favorite to help teams realize their listening gaps and work on them. When people feel heard and understood, they tend to feel more valued and are more likely to connect with the other person. Making people feel this way also contributes to loyalty and builds stronger relationships than following surface-level tactics.

100% believe self awareness is key. The cheat code to building effective and authentic work relationships is to firstly know your own personal values and personality type. When collaborating with others identify where the ‘person’ or ‘people’ sit on the value barometer for you and be adaptive but not to your detriment. This is why you may feel with some it is more challenging to work or collab vs others. If someone has low to 0 self awareness it makes it tricky to provide any feedback, guidance or advice. It would be like ‘pulling teeth’ as the old saying goes.

I’ll add that no man is an island and we’re bound to interact and engage with peeps from diverse backgrounds and personalities. The key is how we wish to present ourselves appropriately. It helps with having a healthy dose of perspective taking and empathic listening; always keeping an open mind with dialogues and conversations being non-judgemental or harbouring self-serving biases.

Adaptability is also essential because it empowers individuals to actively adjust their communication and interaction styles, fostering more effective and harmonious connections. Understanding diverse personality types is crucial, but adaptability allows us to fine-tune our approach. This includes mirroring behavior, situational adaptability, and cross-cultural sensitivity, all of which enhance relationship building in various contexts.

Paying attention to each individual's uniqueness is key to building meaningful connections. Often, we project our own feelings onto others instead of tuning into their mood or the environment. By being attentive, you can tailor your communication strategy to establish a connection and receive valuable feedback. ????

One thing I've found to be a game changer is curiosity. Using curiosity with different personality types leads to greater understanding and better communication. It also encourages us to listen better.

Working with a mix of personalities means really listening, staying true to yourself, and understanding that it's okay to have different views. It's all about balance - connecting with people in a way that suits them, while not losing your own voice, avoiding the people-pleasing trap is key. It's not just about saying 'yes' to avoid conflict, it's about honest conversations where everyone can set their boundaries and speak their mind. This builds trust and respect, the foundations of strong relationships. Keeping things genuine sets the stage for a team where every personality is acknowledged and appreciated.
