Highlight what is at stake for the company and individual should a successful breach happen. Emphasise that ransomware doesn't just threaten the company's well-being but also impacts employees directly. Connecting the company and individual impact could motivate employees to take cyber security seriously.

Addressing the ransomware problem requires a multi-faceted approach involving technology, policy, education, collaboration among stakeholders, and international cooperation to disrupt cybercriminal networks and hold perpetrators accountable.

I'd recommend these steps: 1. Explain Ransomware: Teach what ransomware is and use real-life examples to show its impact. 2. Frequent Short Training: Regularly hold brief sessions on spotting and preventing ransomware. 3. Password & Software Safety: Encourage strong passwords and up-to-date security software. 4. For the worst-case scenario (all systems in the network are encrypted and a blackmail letter is available), an emergency plan should be in place and the processes for responding to and restoring business-critical systems should be practiced at regular intervals. In particular, the business-critical systems must be identified in advance and alternative communication options (outside the compromised network) must be prepared. Important telephone numbers and contact persons should be kept offline (on paper).

Try making it immersive so that people feel the ransomware scenario and it becomes real. The more real the simulations are, the more authentic behaviors you will see. For example, if you know it is just a test - you are unlikely to behave in the same way as if it was real. You don't necessarily know what you or your staff would do under pressure or when emotions of fear, stress, anxiety are triggered. But if you create a safe space to help them understand the consequences of their decisions, you can then use emotional intelligence strategies to build that resilience. Then in real time they will feel more prepared to respond with reason instead of reacting with impulse.

Exercises are a versatile tool. Even simple planning meetings and exercises can raise awareness and help to check how an institution would deal with an incident. This also meets the requirements of emergency management, e.g. according to the modernized BSI standard 200-4 or more generally from business continuity management (BCM, BSI standard 200-4 as community draft 1.0). The BSI has provided appropriate tools for this. During planning meetings and exercises, different levels of compromise (individual systems, individual locations or simply “all systems”) should be played through.

Exploiting a vulnerability in a software program (usually already fixed by the manufacturer) is one of the three most common vectors of attack for ransomware groups. In order to generally be protected against infections through the exploitation of security gaps that have already been fixed, updates should be installed in the IT systems immediately after they are made available by the respective software manufacturer - ideally via central software distribution.
