CSR network is a crucial element of the entire intervention. Networking with multiple stakeholders in the ecosystem is a must to bring in a long term sustainable solution. Designing the intervention along with the NGO partners and the primary stakeholders aids in execution of an intervention which gives importance to the culture, beliefs and value system of the primary stakeholders... Also considering the primary stakeholders as partners would ensure the shift of ownership to those whose needs are being met through the intervention.

The first step to building a CSR network is to identify your stakeholders, which are the groups or individuals that have an interest or influence on your business and its CSR activities. These may include your customers, employees, suppliers, investors, regulators, competitors, media, NGOs, communities, and others. You need to understand their expectations, needs, and concerns, and how they relate to your CSR vision and objectives. You can use tools such as stakeholder mapping, surveys, interviews, or focus groups to gather this information.

Ensure the active participation of all stake holders and clearly communicate their part and responsibility and how important their role or participation in over all achievement

In my experience, stakeholder engagement in CSR should start internally. This involves informing and raising awareness among employees about the company's CSR activities. These employees will serve as advocates and disseminate the message. If CSR isn't well known internally, it may struggle to gain traction externally. By beginning within the workforce, the company can lay a solid groundwork for broader external engagement, fostering a culture of corporate responsibility and community involvement.

Drawing on the strength of CSR partnerships and the wisdom of industry leaders has been crucial to CSR success in any business. I would refer to this practice as "standing on the shoulders of giants." I’ve lived and worded in Asia, and directed CSR initiatives across a network spanning 7 countries, involving over 300 garment factories and mills for renowned brands like Esprit, Calvin Klein, Theory, Guess, FCUK, and Adidas. I always advise organisations to not just engage with stakeholders when they need them, as this makes the power dynamics asymmetrical and gives the stakeholder the impression that the relationship is superficial and transactional. As a solution, have regular check-ins and try to do them in person. This can look like having lunch, attending their events and similar activities. Showing up for them without asking for something in return demonstrates an authentic relationship. Authenticity is key to maintaining long-term relationships as it builds trustworthiness.

Nurturing relationships is usually the hardest part as we get so focused on the goals of our work and getting things done that we end up forgetting about investing the needed time and effort in ensuring relationships are built and sustained. Accordingly, one of the key tools used is having regular meet ups with the key stakeholders to keep the discussions open, and focusing on both them as individuals, as well as their role within the network.

To make sure everyone is included in your CSR network, you need to reach out to more people. Try connecting with different groups and organizations. Get in touch with NGOs, government agencies, and local communities. Talk to people from all walks of life and listen to their ideas. Make sure everyone feels welcome and involved. In my experience a CSR network is built by trust, confidence, integrity and regular monitoring. Gone are the days when CSR is limited to only dispensing funds. A regular monitoring of the programmes and beneficiaries is a more sustainable approach to CSR. The network is thus built by keeping the existing stakeholders and new members in the loop.

Building a comprehensive CSR network requires efficient & effective communication channels for internal stakeholders, promoting diversity through employee resource groups, and engaging external stakeholders like local communities and govt & non govt authorities. Opportunities for employee volunteering and integrating CSR into company culture further enhance involvement making the effort more effective. By definition, any network can't ever have 'everyone' in it because there is someone who isn't included. You can put in place safeguards + processes to intentionally include as many voices/perspectives as possible, but I think the framing of including everyone is a set up for failure. Instead, I'd focus on having a growing network that is continually getting bigger and more inclusive every day. Slight shift but I think it's important.

I worked as the Managing Director of a global think tank federation, including 27 Countries, and 45 Institutes. CSR allowed us to create huge goals, including paving the Silk Road, and excellent Climate Change metrics 20 years ago. If the goal is large enough, the outcome is supremely effective. CSR is glue, goals are super glue.

It is very important to make it understood that CSR is not a reward in exchange for the benefits your organization derives from the stakeholders. It should be a response to the challenges facing the society and how your organization is contributing in addressing them. For example, facilitating the installation of waste collection bins would be a perfect CSR activity that addresses waste disposal challenges.
