How can you build a community around your wildlife photography niche?

The only type of photography that matters to me, in fact, the only photography I have ever engaged with, is the one infused with purpose. I find it is not enough to "hope" our images create change, we have to be active advocates for the wildlife or issues we photograph. When you find your purpose, you will fnd your niche.

South Africa has many hundreds of first class wildlife photographers. As always the secret for success is right time right place one in a thousand shot .

Find what you feel passionate about. The more passion you have, the more that will show through in the stories you tell with the photographs. It may be a certain species, a location or type of story but find that purpose.

As wildlife photographers we have a responsibility to highlight the huge pressures and destruction that wildlife and ecosystems face around the world. I feel there are too many wildlife photographers out there that only care about 'getting the shot' and highlighting their technical expertise rather than engaging and educating their audience on the pressures the wildlife subject faces. With huge followings, there are wildlife photographers out there that could inspire a lot more action with a bit more education, not just showcasing beautiful photos.

Remember that all of us started somewhere on our photography journey. We had to learn basic skills and then apply that knowledge to keep improving our craft. Share even the most basic information because it may seem basic and elementary to you, but to someone just starting, it may be the first brick in a lifelong path in nature photography.

Audiences each have their favorite places to find you and your unique offerings. Know where they are and remember that may mean using multiple platforms to reach them. Customize the content for each platform but be consistent in the message.

Photography, nature photography especially, has seen significant changes in the last two decades that impact the bottom line. You have to get creative and think outside of the box to stay relevant. You have to be cutting edge to stay one step ahead of your competition. It can take a lot of time and money to do that, you have to be flexible, and you have to be willing to change frequently and quickly.

We are in an Information Age that has limitless resources for learning. Blogs, videos, subscriptions, magazines, associations, camera clubs and more all offer excellent ways to stay in touch, network and learn the latest information, whether that is about photography, editing, writing, marketing or other business tasks.
