How can you boost creativity and innovation by tapping into your team's strengths?

To kickstart the enhancement of creativity and innovation, commence by recognizing the inherent strengths within your team. These strengths encapsulate the organic talents, proficiencies, and capabilities that empower your team members to excel and derive satisfaction from their tasks. Employ an array of techniques and resources, including surveys, interviews, feedback mechanisms, or digital evaluations, to gauge these strengths collectively. The ultimate objective is to gain insights into the unique competencies of each team member, what ignites their enthusiasm, and what propels their drive.

As a leader, one of my favorite roles is to work with each team member on their unique talents and strengths. We then make sure they can be in the best position to have the most impact, while feeling fulfilled.

Understanding the unique abilities, passions, and interests of your team members is the cornerstone of fostering creativity. Utilize human-centered design principles to get to know your team on a personal level. By conducting one-on-one interviews and using strength assessment tools, you can uncover hidden talents and passions. Recognizing individuality allows you to create a foundation for innovation that resonates with everyone.

In my experience, it is not only about identifying the strengths but also providing team members with the ability to shine through delegation. Delegation is an art that many times is under or poorly utilized. It must take into account someone’s strengths and abilities. It is not about simply giving someone additional work; it is about trusting that such a team member will do a fantastic job on a particular project or task. Conversely, managers should carefully consider when it is appropriate to delegate a specific task as a developmental opportunity for a team member who might be stretched but who will benefit from the experience and develop certain skills further.

Creating an ambience to allow team members to explore, learn & share their new ideas would always benefit the team .& most importantly not to be resistant to change which is another key element in success. We all become creative in a thriving culture .

Once you've identified your team's strengths, aligning them with tasks and goals is a straightforward way to boost creativity. I personally cannot agree more with this statement “This means assigning roles and responsibilities that match your team members' strengths and interests, as well as providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed.” Knowing each team member’s individual passion and expertise skill set will only lead to a road of success for the Team as a whole. Identifying a individual’s passion will give them the ability to grow, be creative, advance their problem solving skills and give them pride and confidence. Having purpose at work, feeling appreciated, knowing one is making a difference on a daily basis; will make someone jump up, want to come to work, want to collaborate, want to learn and want to succeed.

When my team is thinking about unsolved problems, bringing sales, CS, and support into a brainstorm session is priceless. Building software take different perspectives. Don’t do it in a vacuum.

Many firms boast "diversity" but truly exhibit "Difauxversity". Their commitment is often superficial, leading to feelings of "Fauxclusion" among associates. While they may make token efforts, like spotlighting a few from marginalized groups, they miss the essence of diversity. The absence of qualified black males in leadership is a glaring example. True diversity isn't just about representation; it's fostering inclusivity. Without leadership buy-in, how can we genuinely promote collaboration and diversity?

I have found that one of the most effective tools for collaboration is the "Yes, and..." approach that is the basis of improv. It's not only important to accept new ideas, but to add to them while still maintaining the core of the original idea. By adopting this method, team members are not only heard, but their ideas are respected and valued.

Additionally, different generations have different ways to feel valued and rewarded. reflect on the generational identity of your employee to see what type of reward and recognition method makes them feel most valued. Generally speaking, GenZ needs continuous feedback and recognition, and in much rapid cycles with an affinity for social causes (donations). Millennials have deep online presence so social recognition through social media applies. GenX prefers more private recognition and more autonomy as their reward like trips.

Look at their past job experiences and projects Try to match qualities with past job experiences . Make a list of their strengths and weaknesses . What revs them up, and what drains their energy ? What past feedback have your team recieved? How do your team respond to stressful situations Fight ,flight, or freeze ? All these will help your team to be more aware of themselves . This will help you unlock the true creativity within .
