1 What are informal collaborations?

Whilst not governer by formal contracts - I belive that in the informal collaboration you have a relationship and commitment to secure your ambition and that of your partner. If you are forming an informal collaboration I invite you to think about how you would feel if your partner failed to deliver on their commitment to you. I imagine you would be disappointed - hence I believe that even though there is no legal contract signed - you are made a commitment to another party and unless you change that arrangement its important to see it as a commitment, a contract.

3 How can you initiate informal collaborations?

Informal collaborations are often spontaneous, organic, or opportunistic. However, you can also take deliberate steps to initiate them. To begin, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and why you need collaboration, as well as be open to new possibilities and outcomes. Additionally, you should map potential collaborators who share your values, interests, or objectives and have skills or resources that can complement yours. When reaching out, it is important to communicate your needs, goals, and expectations respectfully and honestly. Moreover, explore areas of common ground where mutual benefit or synergy can be found. Finally, propose ways to collaborate that are feasible, realistic, and respectful.

Nurturing and maintaining informal collaborations is essential for their success. This includes regular and effective communication with collaborators, appreciating and acknowledging their contributions, resolving conflicts and challenges, and evaluating and adapting the collaboration to changing contexts, goals, and circumstances. It's important to keep in touch with collaborators, update them on progress or changes, listen to their feedback, express gratitude for support or partnership, address any issues or disagreements that arise, seek constructive solutions that respect both perspectives, and assess the effectiveness of the collaboration. By doing so, you can ensure that your collaborations are dynamic and evolving.

Talk, talk, and more talk. Throughout the collaboration, there will be changes - changes in organisation leadership (political or officer), and it is imperative that the collaborating party is quite informed and the new leaders are made aware very quickly of what commitment has been made to who and why. This last point is crucial to ensure you secure the new leaders buy into the collaboration early on - or if they do not support you have time to convince them or to agree to leave the collaboration in a way that does not harm the other party.

5 What are some examples of informal collaborations?

Informal collaborations are diverse and context-specific, but some examples include a peer learning network to share best practices, a coalition of community organizations collaborating on a public awareness campaign, a team of volunteers co-creating a digital platform to empower marginalized youth, and a network of grassroots activists partnering with a media outlet to challenge a social injustice. All of these collaborations have been used for community development.

In my experience informal collaborations can include parents and schools working together to help children grow and learn. It usually happens through conversation and the recognition of the same ambitions. But formal collaborations can easily full over if one party do not feel valued or a decision is taken by one party without conversation with the second party.

There are so many possibilities when a community is able to share their existing networks. In education I have- -surveyed community members on causes and partnerships that already matter to them - showcased examples of best practice through informal presentations at coffee/lunch and learn times, to inspire and rally action - devoted time to listen to the ideas of community members not usually heard as often - given common time to access/ work on existing projects and talk about them. A showcase or celebration of milestones is a positive way to keep momentum. Most folks have an area of passion that can contribute to community development - it’s seeing great examples and being given intentional time in schedules that ensures success.

The value of collaborations will always out-weight the costs to a company for growing and maintaining a collaboration. Quite simply, because the cold will bring diversity. That diversity will 1000% pay back in terms of customer/clients response.
