Working as an EDI-focused SAP consultant, I believe that you don't need to be an expert in "all the layers" of EDI. For example, I need a deep understanding of business process scenarios that use EDI to define the scope and check some key points for certain processes. I also need to understand EDI standards to manage the opportunities and limitations of message processing and conversion. On the other hand, my understanding of transport layers is more superficial. I can explain the benefits and drawbacks of AS2 versus FTP for business users, although I have never configured such a connection myself. Usually, an infrastructure team is in charge of this from a technical standpoint.

This is one of the hardest parts of doing EDI. While the transactions are fairly uniform in nature - customer and business needs will always vary. During testing of a new integration it is extremely easy to forget an important piece of data that may be needed for your team or even may be required by the customer. When working with large vendors like Walmart - they provide reference documentation so the data they receive will never change. The issue with that becomes internal business needs. If some sort of data is unavailable it is your responsibility to determine how to make it available or have it properly reflected on the partner’s side. At the end of the day - an EDI developer acts as the middleman internally and externally.
