Use the viewfinder to begin with, it is different than looking at a screen and you are actually looking through the camera in most situations. This will help you focus your attention. Digital photography does not allow you to break rules. You have to work around the program.
Often, I speak with photography beginners afraid of touching their camera and making modifications. Remember : it's a machine, a tool, a medium. You use it, not the other way around. So you have to learn about the camera, the shutter speed, aperture, and the ISO sensibility, how they balance each other. I found it easier to memorize once I used a view camera : because everything became tangible, explainable, visible. Try to see the mecanics, go beyond the graphs. Once you train enough and feel more confortable, often ask yourself : "Do I like this photo I just took ? Is the result as I want it ?". If not, look for reasons why it's not up to your expectations and learn again. Congrats, you are hooked on photography !

I believe that the technical skills are easy to learn, but putting your personal vision into your photographs is much more important. What are you trying to express? What emotions are you trying to evoke in those who really SEE your work and try to interpret it? You need to capture peoples’ souls through their eyes, and for that, you MUST get to know them before starting to shoot. What do they want you to portray about them? I always try to get them to make as many different faces as possible - from looking straight into the lens, laughing, smiling and then have some fun with them looking afraid, surprised, etc., and that’s when I get the best shots of them throwing their heads back laughing. We see what we know. We understand based on our experience. When you try to reach the level when your camera, lens, your knowledge is kind of “synchronized”, then you start creating. Photography means “drawing with light”, so you can call a photographer “painter with light” ... Yes! Sounds magical. So here you can share your perception, ideas, feelings with us, your audience. And the most important thing is not to be afraid that someone will not understand you or will say something negative. Art is subjective. Feelings connected to logic and perception, so your creation is not for everyone, it is for somebody who feels and thinks the same way like you or it will make someone think differently.

And there are those top photographers, which magic is just beyond everything you'll ever be able to create, which is a beauty in itself.
In person portfolio reviews are usually the best way to get feedback about your work. I was fortunate in having Mary Ellen Mark review my portfolio at the beginning and end of her workshop. It was life changing.
Seeking feedback from friends and family is not the way to go. Seek feedback from people who understand photography or videography. Join a local camera club or online groups. If you are at a point where you have customers get feedback from them too but be careful, their knowledge on your skill set is low, that's why they hired you. That doesn't mean that you can't learn from them, people will surprise you sometimes. I would also advise against feedback from social media, too much of it is fake and even more is uneducated. Find a mentor if possible. Just make sure you understand where your feedback is coming from. How good are the eyes that they are looking through?
Be very strategic about asking feedback. Like other people before me mentioned, seeking advice from family or "random" people (sorry) won't help you much. It is much more likely to discourage you, give you wrong directions. Find someone you think "This person is better than me, he/she makes pictures I like, that person knows what she's doing". Ask that person, or find a way to analyse their work and apply it to yourself. Building your style is pretty much a path that never ends, a hunger never fed. Or if it stops, you stop progressing.

El desarrollo de un estilo probablemente no tenga que ver con ninguna tendencia. Si no con un largo camino de experimentación y exploración para encontrar coincidencias. Es una búsqueda profunda de algo que se vincule con la estética que te conmueve. Identificar las temáticas que deseas trabajar puede ser los más complejo y cada obra creada será un paso para encontrar ese que deseas desarrollar. Muchas veces estos no estarán en coherencia con las tendencias de mercado. Y esa es una virtud. Pues te permite encontrar tu propia voz.
