This can help by also allowing asynchronous feedback, minimising time-consuming project update meetings. Your system doesn't need to be fancy to work. A solid google/excel spreadsheet and diligent time/calendar blocking could be all that you need to stay on track with your projects. However, if you are getting paid based on the project, you need to know how long each task will take to develop an accurate quote and charge adequately for your time.
