The first most important question to ask yourself is whether or not you need location audio. In my experience, having been through many post-production cycles, about 90% of field audio gets tossed out. So know what you want to record, what is essential to your story, and choose your technology accordingly. While mics are important, what's just as important is your preamp. Phantom power alone on most inexpensive mics will not give you a great sound. But you can really improve that sound by choosing a field recorder with built-in preamps or having a light, portable preamp as part of your audio-capture signal chain. Don't forget about preamps.

I've shot on busy street-corners in major metros with busses screeching their brakes. I've shot deep in forests where there's nothing but wind and birds. I've shot in cars, planes, trains and even horse-drawn carriages. Each of these spaces added their own unique character to the narrative. But they also had unattractive noise floors to contend with. So when shooting location audio, ask yourself this question: is the ambient noise a desirable character in this scene or is it simply an obtrusive distraction?

But more importantly, learn how to do it yourself. Every filmmaker should understand the rudiments of sound editing because this is essential to storytelling. There are great free resources today that can teach you how to edit sound in numerous applications. Most DAWs (digital audio workstation) operate on very similar principles - they just put the buttons in different places. I believe it's worth it to learn how to operate at least one DAW.
