1 Types of PPE

When working with electricity, it's important to use the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect yourself from electrical hazards. Depending on the voltage level, the nature of the work, and the environmental conditions, this may include insulated gloves and sleeves, safety shoes or boots with rubber soles, hard hats with non-conductive shells and liners, eye and face protection, flame-resistant clothing, and ear protection. This PPE can help reduce the risk of electric shock, protect from falling objects or contact with overhead lines, prevent injuries from sparks or arcs, protect against burns or fire, and reduce the noise level from generators, transformers, or motors.

Make sure equipment has an arc flash label no more than 5 years old. Base your PPE on the information on the arc flash label. Correct gloves for the voltage you may contact. Gear is rated to the arc flash category.

2 Inspection and maintenance

Before you use any PPE, you should inspect it for any damage, wear, or defects that could compromise its effectiveness. Look for cracks, holes, tears, cuts, burns, or stains on the materials. Check the fit, function, and expiration date of the PPE. If you find any problems, do not use the PPE and report it to your supervisor. You should also clean and store your PPE properly after each use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing, drying, and storing your PPE. Avoid exposing your PPE to sunlight, heat, moisture, chemicals, or contaminants that could degrade its quality.

Store PPE properly - shock hazard gloves should not be stored inside of the leather gloves. - store gloves in bag with cuffs down to avoid debris getting into them. - do an inflation test prior to using EVERY TIME. Use glove inflator or scoop and roll method. - keep arc flash gear clean and dry. Only clean gear according to manufacturer’s instructions. If there are ANY issues with the gear immediately remove them from service.

3 Usage and limitations

Using PPE correctly is essential to avoid electrical hazards. You should wear the appropriate PPE for the task and the hazard level, as well as follow safety rules and procedures for working with electricity such as de-energizing, locking out, tagging out, testing, grounding, and isolating the equipment. It’s important to be aware of the limitations of your PPE; for example, insulated gloves and sleeves can lose their insulation over time or due to punctures, abrasions, or moisture. Additionally, safety shoes or boots can provide some protection from electric shock but are not a substitute for insulated mats or platforms. Hard hats can protect your head from impact but not from high-voltage shocks or arcs. Eye and face protection can shield your eyes and face from flying particles or radiation but can also impair your vision or fog up. Flame-resistant clothing can reduce the severity of burns or fire but are not fireproof or arc-proof. Ear protection can lower the noise level but can also affect your hearing or communication. By using PPE properly, you can reduce the risk of electrical hazards and injuries; however, it is not a substitute for safe work practices and training. Always follow electrical safety standards and regulations, and seek guidance from your supervisor if you have any questions or concerns.

One must never assume that equipping themselves with proper PPE will provide immunity from all electrical hazards. While working with electrical equipment, it is always imperative to assume that electrical equipment are 'live'. Always emphasize on the 'trust but verify' process even when you spot visible LOTO tags.

You have to know how to read arc flash labels first. After reading it, you must understand how to interpret it concerning PPE and distance from the hazards. It does no good if someone wears an arc flash PPE and does not know the difference between different types of boundaries that exist.
