I would say try to avoid place that still does waterfall development and help your career by working in a development team that does agile, either SCRUM or Kanban. However, no matter what model of SDLC you find yourself in, the key to understanding the requirement is asking the right question. Always enter a requirement gathering session with the mindset of being an end user using the system. Always challenge the requirement to think about all the different scenarios that could possibly go wrong. Then ask the stakeholders “what happens if…” 9/10 of the time I find they would not have thought of that scenario. The real value you bring as a tester is your ability to see where things can go wrong before they go wrong!

Identify list of requirements Discuss with stakeholders and business users the requirements are testable acceptance criteria Analyse the all risk criterias and Prioritize the requirements Clarify, undestand and confirm acceptance criteria with DEV team along with avaialble Test Environment Identify all fail-over scenarios and clarify how system handles these conditions and possibility of occurances and simulate in test environment Create Test Strategy and Test Plan and review with team aka Project Manager, DEV team and Test Manager Write Test Cases and review within team Ready for Test when the code is ready Note:All these process can be maintained and shared based on availability of inhouse supported tool in the company.
