My 5 rules of networking: 1. Smile - or at least seem positive. 2. Be yourself - don't try to put out an impression of who think you should be. That includes rule 1. But even if smiling isn't you, try not to project a frown or negativity. 3. Give more than you get - You can't look at people for what they will give you. Flip it, what can you give them and the return will happen when it's time. 4. Never burn a bridge - don't make a promise you can't keep. Don't go behind someone's back or say bad things about them. They will always find out. 5. Be memorable - follow up with emails, notes, LinkedIn requests and find ways to keep people in your loop.

Sometimes, people forget the true essence of Networking and try to control the conversation. It is important to convey the most important ideas but we should also practice active listening.

Great thought! To add: Generally, we get 2 to 3 minutes to spend with a participant in a networking event. However, the first 30 seconds of our conversation decides whether we are getting the next 2 and half minutes. By knowing the participants in advance, we can easily decide which USP we should highlight to grab attention. Preparation is a must!!!

This is the most important part. More you know about people, more chances that you can start conversations by relating to them. A known fact can be helpful in starting a conversation with anyone. Great if we can invest time and do a background study about people we are about to meet.

One underrated piece of advice! Be genuinely happy for the successes and achievements of others in your network. Celebrating their accomplishments demonstrates your support and strengthens the bond between you.

Be yourself and be transparent. When I am in networking events I make it about the person I am talking to and not about myself. Great opportunity to speak life and encourage others. Be the person who is the sponge soaking up knowledge of who is where and does what!

In my experience, authenticity is critical to building networks. The goal is to find effective long-term networks and trust comes with authenticity. We all can sense an inauthentic individual. Even if the product or service is interesting and connected to your problem, if the connection is not a respectful exchange it likely won’t sustain. Networking, while it can bear fruit in the short-term, it is best developed for the long-term. Authentic encounters are critical to the long game.

Focus on the relationship & enjoy the person you’re privileged to connect with. Ask good questions and listen without ulterior motives. Think: How can I serve this person? How can my network and know-how be a building block for them & their business?

Bringing in different views helps make sure what I've learned and experienced gets across the way it's meant to. When we mix in other people's insights with my own learning, we fill in the blanks and make sure the message hits home for a bigger crowd. There's a stark difference between organic networking and textbook networking. I agree being prepared well in advance will definitely place you above but let's not skip usually people at such gathering do have networking skills.
