What i will add to this is that firstly understand the exact requirements of stakeholders and see how they can be met with business goals. The stakeholders' requirements and other things as well need to be classified as functional and non functional requirements and carefully documented for facilitating priority of work. Finally the key right from the stage of defining clear requirements if collaboration and attitude towards adaptability.

There is no question clear requirements are crucial. So, what are clear requirements? When an architect asks a web designer to have all web pages background green it seems clear till the customer sees the results and calls it yellow. A clearer requirement in this case is RGB 0,255,0. Even better requirement will add the desired intensity, for example RGB 0,150,0.

Further, have a prototype where you can test various tools and technologies if you have the time and budget for it. Also one very important thing is dont go for End of life or end of support kind of tools and technologies as they may not get support in future.

Errors are bounds to happen, we are human Something that this article is not pointing is that: iterate over your code, refactor, change concepts over time Implement design pattern when there is value to it: this code change frequently (not in the future, the past should prove it), the code is growing fast so its hard to maintain. Something that never change and that don't grow dont get the worth of design pattern Iterative mindset, correction of technical debt is a key to obtain a product of good overall quality and in time. Autmated test and analysis tools should secure your refactoring The worst scenario is that when a developper is afraid to change something, strained to maintain a low quality code
