How can you avoid common misconceptions about working in the oil and gas industry?

1. the industry is NOT dying. read the BP stat review, Fossil Future, and Moral Case for Fossil Fuels 2. We don't only care about money. Yes it's a business, but we have a commitment to safety and the environment 3. We do think renewables have potential and there should be investment in this type of energy

In my opinion the oil and gas indestructible will never go away. The renewable industry is way behind and inefficient. If people outside of O & G just realized what is made from oil they would be very shocked! From when I started in the industry to today it has changed two fold. It is safer by far, it’s cleaner, it’s also becoming a great neighbor with all the different charities that they donate to. Early on I saw some unsafe stuff that would never happen today. Oil and gas companies are facing a talent shortage, and most young people think of oil and gas as a dirty industry and believe that it's a sinking ship. Which is not true, demand for energy is continually increasing, and oil and gas will play a major role.

1. This is true Oil and Gas is majorly used as a fuel but there are lot of other industries that are also linked with petroleum products. 2. Interesting thing is China, India and US are using coal as major source of energy and even after centuries, coal is still used widely for power generation. We haven't been able to replace Coal till now as it's cheaper source and considering this Oil and Gas is going to stay for longer for sure. 3. Petroleum is sustainable source of energy. There will be a time when green energy will be cheaper and it will replace fossil fuel but until then Petroleum is going to rule this world.

The industry is not dying. The industry is evolving and it’s shifting to continue to provide and supply the world’s energy needs. The oil and gas is one of the oldest industries in the world, and it has faced many challenges and will continue to do so, but these challenges have made the industry stronger as we adapt to meet the global demands. Being part of this industry is to be part of the most dynamic and diverse industry in the world, and that what makes us resilient and assured that will continue to thrive and provide reliable and sustainable energy across the world.

Contrary to the misconception, it actually offers a diverse array of jobs, skills, and experiences. From engineers and geologists to technicians, environmental scientists, economists, and project managers, the industry requires a wide range of expertise. Furthermore, roles within the industry can vary significantly depending on factors such as specialization, location, and sector (e.g., upstream, midstream, downstream). Moreover, the industry operates in various environments, from offshore rigs to remote deserts, each offering unique challenges and opportunities. Additionally, as technology advances and the industry evolves, new roles emerge, requiring different skill sets and experiences.

At one time it was a little unsafe. Today it’s a much different situation. We go through many safety meeting and training. It’s up to the individual to take it serious. If you don’t take it serious you will be weeded out!

With advancements in technology, stringent regulations, and comprehensive training programs, the industry has significantly reduced the occurrence of accidents, injuries, and illnesses. Furthermore, industry stakeholders prioritize safety as a core value, investing in state-of-the-art equipment, implementing rigorous inspection and maintenance procedures, and fostering a culture of safety awareness among employees. While risks exist in any industrial sector, the oil and gas industry has demonstrated a commitment to continuously improving safety standards and practices.

Undeniably, remote workers face a plethora of issues, ranging from physical hazards to psychological impairments. Isolation, loneliness, and job insecurity sparked by unstable employment landscape due to market downturn and push toward renewable energies, can significantly contribute to development of mental health conditions. Good news is that there are effective measures to mitigate those issues. Employers need to come up with solutions targeted at customizing the help available to individuals. Apart from formal Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) which entails expert psychiatric services at the workplace, informal peer support such as conversation between leaders and workers, are sound solutions to address the mental health issues.

Operations in O&G industry contain a wide array of hazards and dangers. Consequently, Health and Environmental Safety is key for reliable and safe work. There are hundreds, or even thousands safety methodologies and approaches that O&G companies apply in daily operations, and those measures evolve permanently (considering innovations and legal regulations). Companies tend to educate their employers right from the beginning, since the moment of hiring. Such educational appoaches sometimes can last up to 2-3 months, and employees are not allowed to commence their routine work without that training. To conclude, O&G - is SAFE industry to work in. However, keep in your mind, safety starts with each individual - it starts with You!

While certain technical roles may require specialized qualifications, the industry also encompasses a wide range of positions that cater to various skill sets and educational backgrounds. For example, in addition to engineers and geologists, the industry also employs professionals in finance, marketing, human resources, and legal fields. Moreover, many companies within the industry actively promote diversity and inclusion initiatives to attract talent from different demographics and backgrounds. Additionally, advancements in technology have opened up new opportunities within the industry, creating demand for individuals with expertise in areas such as data analytics, automation, and digitalization.

There is no specialty called the oil industry. Indeed, this industry has built its reputation on the sum of talents that it is able to bring together and make work as a team for a common objective. A mudlogging team, for example, requires geologists, electronics engineers, computer scientists and even mechanics to run the machine. On a larger scale, the same is true for drilling; if it is true that the requirements in terms of profitability and competence are high, the fact remains that success in accomplishing a task firstly takes on the colors of teamwork, respecting QHSE policies, respecting procedures, acceptance of others and of course willingness and being able to withstand working under pressure.

This industry is far from boring. From embracing the latest technology and utilizing AI in unique and advanced applications. To entrepreneurs stepping out on their own building companies and providing solutions in innovative ways. To the cool technologies that are used to extract the energy needed to fuel the world. This is a pretty diverse, fun, cutting edge industry to be in. Added bonus: an industry full of some genuine, intelligent, supportive individuals as well! The oil and gas industry should continue to re-introduce itself to the world to showcase the excitement, diversity, and fun and important opportunities there are here.

The oil and gas industry is anything BUT boring! Global presence - being in oil and gas has given me the opportunity to travel the world on a regular basis, encountering so many different cultures. Many avenues and job categories - oil and gas companies, service providers, technology companies, regulatory, academic, government. Diverse perspectives and backgrounds - I know a virologist that works in oil and gas. I know a licensed therapist that works in oil and gas. I know neurodiverse individuals that work in oil and gas. I know someone who invented a very popular Anheuser-Busch beverage that works in oil and gas now. The list goes on - it’s the best people you’ll meet, doing truly innovative work. It’s pretty fun if you ask me.

It is far from boring, as it offering dynamic and engaging opportunities from exploring and extracting resources in remote locations to implementing cutting-edge technologies and navigating complex geopolitical landscapes. For example, the industry plays a pivotal role in global energy markets, where professionals monitor and analyze supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical tensions, and regulatory developments. This requires a keen understanding of market trends, risk management strategies, and strategic decision-making. Furthermore, it is at the forefront of innovation, with ongoing R&D efforts aimed at improving environmental sustainability, such as carbon capture and storage technologies, and advancing renewable energy solutions.

In the almost 17 years since I joined the oil industry, I have seen the high pace at which R&D teams produce innovative solutions to continually overcome new challenges, I have seen so many times where we had to resume drilling on projects abandoned in the 1980s and 90s, thanks to internal training I saw so many young people excel in fields where the school did not seem to have prepared them in terms of diplomas (geophysicists working as data engineers), among the seniors I saw the satisfaction still intact of successfully accomplishing missions, keeping working with different people from different cultures, that I finally understood that nothing, absolutely nothing in this profession should be considered routine.
