Connected with lack of skills, competition with other engineerings must to be considered. Environmental engineers know many things but in most of their fields of knowledge (not all though) there will often be a different figure more specialised. So in job seeking you'll compete with chemical, hydraulic, civil, geotechnical, electrical engineers (even environmental sciences) that can even do the same job with better skills. That's why many junior environmental engineers end up in a career not coherent with their background. Especially at the beginning when you lack of experience and knowledge, it's very difficult to stand out of the crowd and at the end many accept the first path they find.

This is specifically important if you choose a job where there is less hands on training (i.e. fieldwork; field over site; etc.)

Avoid saying a chemical is not present in water, air, soil etc. instead state it’s below the detection limit. Bonus: know what the DL is relative to regulations or health screening levels. No such thing as zero.

Environmental Engineering is the engineering responsible to analyze a whole process and integrate technology towards lean assemblies and operations. This requires not just internal skills of communication but a good business background, as most of the projects are only succesful if you manage to aggregate several stakeholders together. One thing that must always be clear, environmental engineering is not ecology or biology, we are engineers and we have to be efficient and logisticwise feasible to create profitable projects within environmental technology (energy, prime matter comsuption, water reuse...). This must be always a focusing point, be connected and go after the stakeholders to present solutions not problems, being feasible.

Environmental Engineering is such a broad field. As professionals we run the risk of narrowing our focus so much that we loose sight of its place in the greater picture. Through collaboration with other disciplines and professionals we gain a better understanding of what it takes to have a successful project. Keeping in mind that we don't know what we don't know allows us to better listen and learn from others within the same field.

The environmental domain allows professionals for engagement and exposure to all kinds of stakeholders. The internal stakeholders can be companies’ top management, operations staff, colleagues, and external stakeholders such as clients, contractors, regulators, communities, and shareholders. Thus, engagement with all stakeholders requires clear and knowledgeable communication and collaboration, which in turn provides great experience and new learnings and boost confidence of professionals in terms of handling stakeholder issues. Thus, to develop communication and collaboration professional need to develop their soft skills, such as listening, speaking, writing, presenting, negotiating, and teamwork.

The ever-growing environmental domain demands creativity innovation and tailor-made solutions from professional to excel in this. As the domain has various stakeholders, thus single solution or conventional methods may not fit the requirements of all stakeholders. The recent topics such as Net Zero Carbon Emissions, Circular Economy, Life Cycle Assessments, ESG reporting, require professionals to gain knowledge of recent regulations, policies, frameworks and provide tailor made solutions on related topics. Professionals can gain related competency by experience through implementing or providing solutions and then analyzing outputs from it, following practices or solutions implemented by industry leaders and experimenting with innovations.

Yes, we all want to be creative. Here’s the problem- the many prescriptive regulations that can limit innovation. Yes, we all want innovation, clients especially so because innovation is arrived at by lowering costs, reducing schedules and improving results. It may not be achievable in an arena with prescriptive rules and stakeholders that are adversarial and in many cases deliberately so because it fits their agenda. Do things move along toward improving how we reach environmental objectives? Yes over the medium- to long-term. But on any given environmental project? Not necessarily so. Sometimes you just have to follow the tried and true because of the need for a predictable schedule, timeline, result and cost. Innovation involves risk.

The decisions or solutions provided by environmental engineer has impact on stakeholders environmental, social and governance aspects. Thus, they clearly need to follow ethics principles and consider impacts of decisions and actions while providing the solutions and be responsible for them. Any solutions or decisions taken under the influence or by cutting corners, violating rules, ignoring impacts, or acting unprofessionally, can lead to significant risks related to business, continuity, reputational, cost, and legal. To avoid this, professional must be aware of all related regulations and polices and the approach and solutions should align with it by following code of ethics throughout the process.

Environmental engineering affects the air and water far outside of your plant and facility boundaries. Being good stewards of the environment is an integral part of retaining and growing manufacturing in the United States. It's also important to remember that decisions you make now can impact soil, air and water quality for many years. Treat each decision as if you're protecting your own health and the health of your loved ones, both this generation and those to come.

Above all, it is vital to have a mentor who knows what they are doing. This usually makes a huge difference in most careers. You know what to do, how to do it and when. Mentorship demands sacrifice from both mentor and mentee but in the end, the rewards are significant and positive.

Remember that engineers aren’t perfect and everyone makes mistakes and there’s someone smarter than you.
