1 Consider the purpose

I believe also in first, giving a particular topic on which writing is done. For instance, you could, for Year 1 children, ask them to change the materials that the little pigs, in "The Three Little Pigs", used to build their houses. Let them come up with their ideas and if possible, just draw (considering the class and age). Having done the above, in another assessment, let them choose a story of their choice, and try to change the characters. It might be Chad instead of Cinderella or the Little Merboy, the Prince and the snail instead of the Princess and the frog.

3 Vary the format

I have found templates of story maps not only useful, but efficient. These maps many times, serve as a plan to the main writing and for some children, it is their final work. For reinforcement of paragraphs and fronted adverbials and also connectives, I have often used worksheets with the adverbials or connectives already written so the children need to make their sentences tie in with what is written.

4 Adapt the criteria

When assessing writing, criteria refers to the aspects or dimensions of writing that you want to evaluate. These may include content, organization, language, and conventions. It is important to keep impressing on the learners what you expect to see in their work. For instance, whatever grammar topic that has been taught should be visible. Punctuations and spelling should be noted. These reminders and more should be said as a reminder as they write.

Whatever feedback that is given to a learner, I like to encourage the learners that they cam do more. I show them what they could have added to make their work read better. For every written work, there is always room for improvement.

Note that some people can be considered as "lazy writers". They would prefer to read or in some cases that I have experienced, draw. You cannot assess these learners in the ae way as those that love to write. For those that like to draw, I alow them to make a quick sketch of what they would like to write about, then ask them to use the sketch to write. These people eventually become good writers because they first "see" what they want to write. For those that like to read, I ask them to remember a story or something that they had read before, make some notes as a plan, then use this for their own writing.
