How can you ask your manager for feedback about your Search Engine work?

Proactivity is the name of the game here. Come to the meeting prepared with the performance metrics you are being evaluated on, specific questions to go over, and a proposed plan of action for next steps to discuss with your manager. Own your area, but show you’re open to feedback and open dialogue about your performance and/or vision.

One thing I've found helpful is to start by reminding your manager or leader about the goals you're working toward. This helps set the stage for you to build your "presentation". Yes, it's a presentation. You should have this prepared for both visual and auditory communication. Why? Multiple communication modes will help you present the case of your work aligned to goals and then you can present your question to see how they think you're doing.

Learn to ask the right questions for career advancement. Project-Specific Questions: Ask how your recent projects, like a keyword research initiative, could have been improved. Industry Alignment: Inquire about how your work aligns with current SEO trends and best practices. Constructive Criticism: Request specific examples of what you could do better, particularly in areas like link building or content strategy. Collaboration Dynamics: Ask how your work impacts and supports other team members. Future Focus: Query about areas for learning and potential involvement in upcoming projects. These points offer a streamlined approach to preparing effective questions for feedback sessions.

Choosing the right channel will help you reach a larger customer base. For example, if I talk about SEO, I will post in the morning from 10:00 to 12:00 and go to channels like Group, Linkedin, etc. and at about 2:00 in the afternoon I post videos. Choosing the right channel will help you save time and create more real conversions.

If you have regular 1:1's with your manager, be proactive and suggest an agenda for your next session. This will help your manager/leader be mentally prepared to discuss with you AND not leave them focused somewhere else. Give them prep time as well. If you have key points or goals to review, against the actions you'll be reviewing, make sure your manager/leader has those points ahead of time.

Maximize the impact of your feedback sessions by choosing the optimal time and communication channel tailored to your manager's preferences and schedule. 1. Timing is Crucial: Ask for feedback when your manager is least likely to be busy or stressed, like after a project completion. 2. Frequency Matters: Balance your requests, aiming for quarterly or post-major project feedback. 3. Align with Performance Reviews: Time your feedback requests with regular performance appraisals. 4. Preferred Communication Channels: Use a communication method that suits your manager, such as email, scheduled meetings, or feedback platforms.

If their feedback isn't making sense, it's ok to pause and ask for clarity. If their feedback is one sided, it's ok to ask for something on the opposite side of the coin. Eg - if the feedback is only negative, ask for 1 positive piece of feedback. Same if the feedback is only positive. This helps you both to cover the whole story, not just a single viewpoint. This also shows your manager/leader that you are open to critique and looking for growth.

What is your SEO work attempting to do for the company? Traffic alone doesn't build a business, so what happens after you've SEO'd the heck out of your site... conversion, engagement, multiple pages visited, etc. Talk to those who are in charge of demand generation, SDRs and BDRs who work the leads that come from form fills, etc.

Your direct manager may be your go to point of contact to discuss results, but they may not be fully equipped to effectively strategize with you - depending on the structure of your team and company. Oftentimes, teams are built out with specific skillsets in mind to expand on the manager’s knowledge, which may mean that their strong suit lies elsewhere and they aren’t quite as able to get into the weeds of a comprehensive SEO plan with you. This is where it makes sense to invite other SEO experts to take a look at and discuss strategy with you. Are you the only SEO expert at the company? No worries; forums and online digital marketing communities are often very receptive to answering strategy questions and help out!

Once feedback is given, sit with it. Think on it. Find 1-2 things you can apply the feedback to immediately and ask if those actions/activities should be your priority before you get to work on them. This shows your manager that you want to work on the most meaningful items as they see it. It can also give you a quick roadmap to role advancement, pay raise, etc.
