For example: 1) Align your understanding of what is required for the next career step 2) Clearly communicate your career ambitions 3) Demonstrate how you are preparing for this next stage 4) Explain how you believe you can contribute to the future of the company and its purpose.

Dont spoil your relationship with any manager due to these conversations. If you are not satisfied with the conversation, now its time to update your Resume. Agian, dont spoil relationship with anyone, be professional in your conversation and your actions.

This is true always, no matter what you doing at work always be respectful and professional. In fact, even if you work in a company that doesn't act professional this will set you apart from the rest and help you stand out in a good way.It is also important to understand that your manager is dealing with budgets, how many people they can promote, and when as well as generally has your best interest at heart. Unless they are a bad manager. If they agree thank them. If they don't agree, thank them for listening and ask how you can show them you are ready to move up so that next time an opportunity to get promoted comes up, you will be ontop of the list. Then thank them for their feedback and set goals, so next time you will get promoted.

This is non-negotiable. I have encountered countless engineers who issue ultimatums, stating that if they don't get promoted, they will leave, without providing any evidence to support their desire. In those moments, I ask for facts and check for evidence of such actions in previous months or years. If their are some points to be disucsed later on, please strike the iron is hot; there is not point of delaying the meeting with big tenuer break. Ideally, it must not be prolonged for more than 10 working days.

If you have a lead see if there is anything they can delegate to you to help them out. If the company has a job matrix or company ladder doc, make sure you are checking to see what you can do more that will show you are ready. Create SMART goals for yourself and keep track of your accomplishments. But most important keep talking to your manager about it. Ask to do the job even if you don't have the promotion.

If your manager does not follow up within the timeframe you settled on, politely restate your case. Repeating your key points and value proposition reminds them of why you deserve advancement. Make sure you and your manager commit to reconvening once they have had a chance to properly evaluate if promotion is appropriate at this stage. Be ready to have this discussion in multiple meetings, and have patience allowing the process to unfold. Keep an open dialogue until a definitive decision is reached.
