How can you approach a design problem that requires a unique solution?

Use an appropriate design methodology to apply to the design problem. Design methods aim to provide frameworks that supports designers dealing with complexity in varied contexts and domains.

In my opnion, contextualizing the design challenge is the most important step. A unique solution for an architectural solution requires a move beyond the boundaries of a specific site and invest in understanding the context. We can come up with innovative a nd creative solutions once we started to understand the social, environmental, cultural and urban factors contributing the uniqueness of the site.

A clearly defined problem invariably contains the correct design direction. These “factors” don’t act as a boundary, but more an opportunity. Above the tangible elements such as materiality, costs, timelines, etc - Designers should consider the end user experience within their workflow. Let the limiting parameters work for you rather than against you. More often than not, this approach has led to significant works of architecture and interior design

The most important step in any process, is to first understand the problem. Before suggesting solutions, ideas or concepts- its imperative to first study the context with a blank slate, do a thorough investigation from all angles, come up with the right questions pertaining to the brief, context, space and users. Once the real issues are identified, a strategic approach, consultation from the right people, and collaboration to come up with ideas can be churned to make a difference, in true sense of the term.

For us to approach a design problem which requires an extraordinary answer, we must know it, search for inspiration in it, think creatively about it, work together with others on it, build and test models of it and then try again and polish up those models so that they are feasible and sustainable enough.

Note down your first reaction/ gut feeling; in most cases, that's the best approach. Do the research and review your initial thoughts.

Example: religious space with Feng Shui principles. This stage involves unleashing creativity to explore different concepts, forms, functions, and materials that align with it. Techniques such as brainstorming, mind mapping, sketching, modeling, and prototyping (now with AI) can be utilized to generate and visualize a range of design ideas that harmoniously integrate the spiritual and Feng Shui elements. Seeking feedback and input from the religious community, Feng Shui experts, and architectural colleagues becomes crucial in refining and improving the ideas, ensuring that the final design not only meets the spiritual and Feng Shui requirements but also resonates with the intended users and the broader community.

Fail and fail quickly. Personally l like to try out as many ideas as possible and gain feedback from my customers. You find that after 4 or five times you will come up with so many ideas. Consider technical, economic, and social factors. 2- Concept Screening: Evaluate each idea against the criteria. Eliminate options that don’t align with the problem statement or lack viability. 3- Prototyping and Testing: Develop more refined prototypes for promising ideas. Test them with users or stakeholders to gather feedback. Iterate based on insights.

Sets of designs can be organized and rearranged based on specific features. In this case, it helps to ask why two designs might be adjacent and similar. For example, consider the design of a hammer with features length, ergonomic grip, and head size. What can we learn by comparing two hammer designs with similar features if they are measured to perform differently, or two dissimilar designs that perform the same? Does this influence our choice of a design based on a specific feature combination?

By conducting a thorough evaluation, you can identify the best idea that meets the problem criteria and aligns with the client's needs and preferences. Remember to involve relevant stakeholders in the evaluation process to ensure a comprehensive and informed decision.

AI-powered tools can create detailed drawings, specifications, models, and simulations, facilitating effective communication and documentation. Additionally, AI can optimize collaboration with engineers, contractors, and consultants, leading to more efficient decision-making and a culturally sensitive design solution.

Omce you have arrived at a better concept you can divide the idea into smaller units and work individually on that. At a later stage you can consult the experts in the smaller units and make the whole design a perfect one

Waiting until Step 5 to persuade stakeholders will result more often in failure or extensive rework than an acceptable solution. The proposed approach may be suitable for a common solution where examples of successful application are readily known and available, but a unique solution requires participation by and buy-in from stakeholders.

It's not just about coming up with a solution; it's about effectively communicating its value to clients, customers, partners or stakeholders. Through clear and compelling presentations, we need to showcase the benefits and uniqueness of our design. We use various media formats like images, videos, and interactive models to bring our vision to life. And importantly, we need to be ready to address any questions or concerns that arise, ensuring everyone's on board with our innovative solution. or having another great idea that can be implemented.

Habitualmente los arquitectos hemos tratado de presentar nuestras soluciones al cliente con las representaciones bidimensionales con las que trabajábamos (los planos de planta o los alzados y secciones), pero el cliente no suele entenderlos bien. Actualmente es necesario aprovechar la facilidad de poder realizar visiones tridimensionales (renderizaciones) e incluso videos para presentar nuestros proyectos al cliente, de modo que sean de más fácil comprensión. In my book, To solve unique problems, it is necessary to study and research related to that topic. Identifying the important and influential factors in designing and coordinating it with the project is a multi-step process. At each stage, comprehensive investigations should be done so that all factors coordinate with each other to produce a suitable and unique final result.

Well, there's always a learning curve. we like to think we are Rammed Earth Specialists and we have been doing it for 15 years. this experience it's based on learning and improving from one project to the next one coming up. the difficulties we got from a past project have helped us face new challenges.

If you are having the same trouble designing or any technical thing, we always make a way in advance in designing or execution. A new technique and design which was preplanned is always good for architects to design and execute with good quality

After finishing a project, it is a reasonable thinking structure to look back and analyze the final product with an objective mind; there will be some aspects for improvement from the methodology, the logistics, or the design solutions to be improved. Be critical of your own work as a learning step to be more efficient and accurate in future works.

They all require a unique solution, otherwise it's not a design problem. Understand the problem Understand what the limits are Decide where opportunity exists in a solution Execute a solution, remembering that it is only "a" solution, not "the" solution. "The" solution does not exist.

It's imperative to always grow and challenge your current thinking. This always prepares you for the next hurdle. I find myself building solutions for fun, thinking I'll never need them, only to use them later or, at a bare minimum, use the experience I've gained. Remember, there is only one way to get to Carnegie Hall: practice. The same applies here. Design, test, iterate. Find out what works before the pressure is on.

When I'm brought a design issue that doesn't have a "prescriptive" solution/methodology, I always start with requesting a clear, concise problem statement. I force the team to "pull up" so that we aren't starting from a place along a path they've already started down. I find that pretty often they think they are looking at big picture and not ruling things out, but they are actually already burdened with self inflicted constraints. You need to allow all your degrees of freedom and work the problem from a clean slate without self imposed limits. There will be plenty of constraints forced upon you by the time you get through all the details of execution!

Here is the structure approach: 1. Begin by thoroughly understanding the problem statement. 2. Conduct extensive research to gather relevant information. 3. Clearly define the design goals. 4. Encourage creativity and innovation through brainstorming sessions. 5. Select the most promising ideas generated during brainstorming. 6. valuate the feasibility of each design concept. 7. Develop prototypes or PoCs for the selected design concept. 8. Iterate on the design based on the feedback if any. 9. Develop detailed implementation plan.

Beyond project completion, it's crucial to maintain engagement. Rather than simply admiring our work, we must glean insights from how diverse individuals experience our spaces in various contexts. Every reality surpasses our imagination, and the time spent reflecting on completed projects before embarking on new endeavors is invaluable for designers. Moreover, fostering an emotional connection between users and creations is paramount. By nurturing this bond, we enable collective growth and ensure that the door to our architecture remains wide open.
