You should understand and follow the company's goals and allign your work to them, but also if you want to participate in renewing them and/or bring in them a piece of your own work. Every successful company, which values its workers, gives its workers also the opportunities to work/have an influence on recreating/revising the company's goals. That is a chance to possibly contribute even in the company's higer (strategic) plans and also bring more of your work into the goals, if deemed. So be familier with the company's goals and look for the opportunities to give your contribution to the reestablishment or revision of the company's goals.

This is really important in an analytical discipline because there are so many sub-topics one can work in. In my experience I've found it can be a balancing act between pursuing your interest versus taking on projects to support the team even if it is not a key interest. Its important to remain open-minded, every few years in my career I've discovered a new fascinating topic I was not already aware of and this is often by taking on broader duties within my team. I try to characterise my growth as a 'T' model. I have depth in one or few areas and expand outwards into other peripheral topics from there. I've found this also helps avoid burn-out as you get to learn and grow on the job.

Cultivating your own projects is also a great opportunity to acquire new skills. A good free access platform to share projects is Github, which can be used also as a technical portfolio for job recruiters.
