How can you address unequal participation in team building activities?

Meet people where they are at. It’s okay not to enjoy team building activities. A good facilitator knows how to include everyone and respect individual contributions and lack of participation. I read people well, and match the energy and expectations that individuals need. Leaders need to acknowledge differences, listen to team members needs and expectations, and adjust to team.

When managing a team and members’ participation, it is good to first assess the situation—-see what is going on, behaviors, patterns, actions, etc. As a team leader, it is important to make every member feel important, valued, respected and appreciated for the talents they bring to the team. One thing that I have incorporated into managing my own team is round-robin style ice breakers at the beginning of each leadership team meeting. This has been a fun experience, including an element of surprise because you have no idea what the assigned manager will bring to our group! This creates a sense of belonging and capacity building!

A great facilitator recognizes just how differently each participant thinks, processes, and participates. Start by meeting people where they are, while arriving with just a smidge more energy and curiosity, to invite your participants to bring theirs. From there, think through different ways you can encourage interaction – and don't rely too heavily on a single style! - In large groups, gently prompt those who have been quiet "I'd love to hear from someone we haven't heard from. Feel free to raise your hand or chime in via chat." - Break into smaller groups (duos and trios are my favorite) - Encourage everyone to take a minute or so before responding - And vary the types of activities! Not everyone loves a silly icebreaker

Nothing gets me excited about participating like a corporate mandate *grin* In our experience, the secret is getting people to choose to participate, or position the experience so they feel like they’re choosing to engage (even if that choice is very controlled).

Post-activity reflection transforms team building into a springboard for growth. Encourage feedback to understand engagement levels. Celebrate wins, recognize efforts, and objectively assess goal attainment. Reflecting together not only measures impact but also equips the team for future success, ensuring every member's voice contributes to a more cohesive unit.

Positioning matters a lot. Our team building clients have events that are strictly “games” and “sessions,” but in many cases they host events the night before that are more casual cocktail and networking events. They use entertainment like magic to help bring people together, start conversations, and give people a foundation they can build on during formalized “team building” work. The shared experience and common ground break down the workplace silos and roles so people can connect as humans rather than co-workers. If people don’t feel welcome and have a sense of belonging as individuals first, the rest really doesn’t work as well.
