How can you use your resume to showcase military service?

Now, let’s talk about how to weave it into your overarching career story. → Evaluate your service through the lens of your next position/career move → For that move, find your matching experiences and skills → List your experience as it happens within your career timeline → Speak in the language of your next employer That last one is a biggie - translate your military experience into civilian language, otherwise, your value may not be fully appreciated. For example: "Led a squad" becomes “Led team of 10” Your service is valuable, and you bring that value to your next position. Simply tell them how. #careermanagement

There are multiple skills learned during military service that could be an asset in any industry. They are team management, attention to detail and even staying consistent in anything. I would not call it a gap but rather a trained skills that few may possess.

It's not a career gap. Military service is a prestigious career that teaches you real life skills which you can implement in any career and will give you an added advantage to excel in other fields.

Military service is not a resume gap. It's an employment choice during one's life or to be completed as part of one's life obligations in certain nations, but it is not a resume gap where one's career is concerned. To think it is a gap is erroneous.

When addressing resume gaps due to my clients' military service, I find it crucial to explain them transparently in the resume summary and a cover letter. For instance, mentioning that you served in the military during the gap period showcases your dedication and discipline. Also, highlight any training or education received during service, as these often equip you with unique skills valuable in civilian jobs. Additionally, mentioning any volunteer work or further education pursued post-discharge can demonstrate your commitment to continuous personal and professional development. Military experience is highly valuable work experience. In turn, when preparing for interviews, reflect on the unique and transferable experience, skills and perspective that you bring to the prospective employer from your time in the military, and have examples ready to discuss/showcase, especially as they relate to the job description. Many companies even have specific initiatives and/or preference for candidates with military experience.

I say add it in the education section. It gives you an education for sure that school could never give. Also it’s a feather in someone’s cap to have served in the military. It shows that you are selfless. I would hire them immediately. It’s a win all around the board.

Have military experience; whether recent or several years ago? Make sure you include it in your resume, LinkedIn, etc. Military experience is HIGHLY desired by employers...and many of them even have specific recruiting initiatives and/or preferences for former military personnel.
