How can you address disrespectful behavior towards different cultures in the workplace?

I have found that not everyone agrees on what constitutes disrespectful behaviour. The concept of this will vary depending on people's individual tolerance levels, experiences and cultural backgrounds. Hence, not only is it very important to have a Code of Conduct that is detailed yet succinct but to also conduct manager forums (at least) so all managers have a shared understanding of what constitutes respectful & appropriate workplace behaviour and to instill that managers have a responsibility to ensure that they hold themselves and their staff to account to these standards. Also holding staff forums (to share the same information would) be preferred but at least at management level it is a must.

Addressing disrespectful behaviors toward different cultures in the workplace is a top-down approach. This means there should be, on ground, an organizational structure that clearly states interaction among workers, boundaries in relationships and a reportage system that facilitates conflict resolution as regards disrespectful behaviors. I believe disrespectful behavior isn't a one-off but a culmination of offenses. No one starts out to take offence at the first instance but at behaviors repeated over time without coignance to emotions and feelings of the affected. At the point of first incidence, the affected should report displeasure, same documented, if valid, shared in the organization as a boundary that should not be crossed.

I agree identifying the problem is the first step. Understanding that different cultures react differently to the the same situation provides a foundation for determining the root cause of the problem.

I recommend you also talk with staff (not just from different cultural backgrounds - but a diverse range of staff) to learn about their expectations and what they consider to be respectful and disrespectful behaviour in the workplace. People from the same culture can have differing opinions on this topic. Ideally, bring intercultural groups together and facilitate them sharing their understandings and expectations around behaviour. This activity produces really strong learning outcomes and builds team cohesiveness.

Agree with this. There is alot of unknown and fear around saying the wrong thing in the workplace and not everyone will set out to intentionally offend someone. However there is a minority that do deliberately set out to offend and they have to be dealt with otherwise that will have an impact on the morale and productivity of the rest of the teams.

Education is the key to help fight our own biases. Information is the light that illuminates our paths to better understanding and respecting our differences.

In my experience, when addressing the behavior , we should lean on their cultural context. Understanding the cultural context provides guidance on the "confrontation style" that will facilitate easy resolution.

Constructively addressing inappropriate behaviour ''in the moment'' (if safe to do so) is best practice. Most people are not comfortable to do this because they fear what type of reaction they will receive. Hence it is important that all staff receive the same training on appropriate workplace behaviour, how to constructively raise a concern with their colleague & how the colleague is expected to respond. Also of great importance is to stress in the training that talking about this concern with anyone else but the relevant colleague, a manager, HR or EAP could be a form of gossip and gossiping can be a form of bullying.

I would replace the word victim with receiver. No employee is powerless, they have rights and should be empowered to use those rights both within and outside of the organization. One must be careful that by validating emotions, you may be seen to be agreeing that the perpetrator was wrong. Listening, empathizing (without agreeing) and encouraging the person to follow their complaints handling procedure are appropriate responses.

There are layers to this: First is how we deal on a personal level with each other: -Is there a clear norm on how the team interacts with each other? If yes, there is a deviation from the norm (there should be consequences to that) If no, set the norms within the team Second, the cultural aspect: Give your teams the tools they need to understand foreign cultures - grasping the WHY behind people actions will raise empathy.
