They are really important if you're giving people a lot of information, since people need time to process what you're saying, so pausing after an important point is a must. And if you pose a question to the audience you need to give them time to reflect or think about it, even if you're not asking them to give you a verbal response. I think judging when and how long to pause for is a great skill for all presenters to master.

I have done presentations where, when I got to an important part, I paused, and just whispered. You don't need to be loud. Some speakers are almost yelling the whole time. It's OK to whisper (just make sure the microphone is right next to your mouth when you do it).

Practice with a coach who can give you real feedback, who is both supportive and honest. I once had a coach that counted how many times I say "by the way." She told me that she was going to flick me with a rubber band if I said it again. I still use her and am so grateful for her advice.
