Working with remote teams is becoming more common and due to various advances in technology easier to do. To be effective, however, from a management perspective, you need to factor in various considerations when working remotely. Including: - Accommodating time differences. Particularly if your team member(s) are distributed around the globe. - Allowing for language and cultural challenges, which may impact the approach of meetings, information exchange, etc., that need to take place. - Be willing to set aside time for on-to-one meetings to clarify/ support certain team members. - Possibly use agile style scrum meeting format with Kanban table support to aid ownership and general status updates. In addition to weekly full meetings.

Working with remote teams who are distributed in other time zones is definitely easier when some flexibility can be introduced. For example, a NY based manager can meet with team members in Europe in the morning, while focusing on West Coast (US) and possibly Asian based teams in the afternoon/early evening. This can allow you to manage your team most effectively by reviewing current tasks with each group and not overloading a single meeting. On the proactivity side, it is best to also set aside one-on-one time with all team members to get a good sense of how each team member feels about their own progress and seeing how to best help each person. This makes for better employees, but also better managers.

In many cases when I have managed IT teams remotely the teams have had a different primary language to mine. So, this needs to be considered during meetings, when distributing documents etc. Additionally, frequently in global, or large multi-national organisations teams with different skill set separate out of different countries. So, it is essential that the project manager, etc., make sure that the various teams are: - Have a clear understanding of their specific responsibilities. - Understand how each teams input relates to the overall deliverable(s). - Working together. - Co-ordinating activities where appropriate. - Have the same, clear, understanding of the deliverable(s) status, etc.
