Communication is really key when it comes to finding the right candidate for a job offer. But before I adjust my style to match the candidate's, I first check in on my own style. I'm more on the direct, casual, relationship-oriented, and pretty expressive side. The important thing is to be authentic and to really listen. I work within a certain framework, but without a fixed script or checklist. The conversation should naturally develop and gain some dynamics. In the end, it's all about making the other person feel comfortable. My strength? To be emphatic and breaking the ice in the conversation and creating good vibes. That way, the comfort factor comes almost naturally.

In French, we use different pronouns to address someone. The pronoun "You", can be translated as "Tu" or "Vous". If you address someone as "vous", it's a sign of respect. If you're on familiar terms, you can use "tu", it's a sign of closeness and familiarity.

A Strategy i use in coaching conversations a lot is Active Listening. This involves listening to understanding what the speaker is saying as opposed to listening to respond. Asking questions is great way to understand deeply (empathize) with the person is saying and paraphrasing to see if I understood correctly is the key to learning more from the speaker without adding my own biases and prejudices.

I was traveling once, teleworking. The connection was very bad and I couldn't make any calls. I switched to whatsapp, which worked better, and that appealed to the candidates, who thought it was an original approach. Since then, I often use Whatsapp. Also, Telephony over IP (VOIP) solutions exist for making calls from abroad.

People may default to formality in interviews as a sign of professionalism. They might just be playing it safe. If you're recruiting for a startup, for instance, it doesn't mean that you have to match the candidate's formal communication style. Try to gauge if this formal demeanor is set in stone or if they could adapt to your more relaxed environment. Breaking the ice and providing your candidate with a relaxed atmosphere and a safe place might help. Lastly, assessing the candidate's ability to adapt their communication is important. Can technical people explain technical topics to non-tech professionals and vice-versa? If a candidate can't adapt their communication style at all, that could be a red flag to be addressed.
