How can you ace phone interviews with virtual team members?

Being prepared is one of the key things for any interview. Researching about the company, going through the job description, finding out who you'll be talking to and preparing questions. As an interviewee, you are also interviewing your potential new company and team members.

Ainda que por telefone, tudo está sendo analisado, portanto além de uma boa conex?o de internet, e testes de conex?es com antecedência para evitar atrasos, esteja em um ambiente longe de interrup??es e organizado! This is very important- I make sure that the link/ credentials are working before I literally walk into the meeting. Also the platform should be compatible with your machine e.g Teams is best used on laptop, while zoom is more dynamic in terms of usability case. If you don't have a power back up - do not dial into a VC on a wifi. These are just key to the basic tech hygiene checks.

- First get a quiet place to use -Test the interview link and your devices 30 minutes before the scheduled time. - make Internet connectivity backup available in case of any connectivity disruption.

You don't have to trust only on plan A, you must have a plan B. I know it could be difficult, but ensure you have a good internet connection and your data quota is not on limit, because if your computer fails, you can use your cellphone. Also, keep close another way to contact to the recruiter, so you can tell him/her if you're in a trouble.

Everybody is telling: test the technology, headset, dial-in no., maybe external microphone, or zoom/teams - links. Yes it is important and usually we take it for granted. Also think about backup strategies. I recommend for important telephone calls have alternatives at hand, e.g. if the link doesn't work due to low internet connection, use a regular phone line. If you have low battery power in you phone, use a computer or landline phone. Just be prepared. In addition, think about your location where you do the call. I find it often annoying if someone is calling me for an important call from the car and is driving while talking. I can see the reason, however it shows the importance to the conversation we have and to me as a person.

I prepare online telephone interviews the same way as I would have in-person interviews. I agree, online it is more handy to put all important information on your desk. However, I review the CV, a linked-in profile, other accessible social media information and take notes. Online, I would open the browser with the different profiles. Related to the job, skills needed, I would prepare questions which are action oriented for the interviewee; e.g. What would you do if your project timeline can't be met? or Reflective questions: if you are a drug, what effect do you have and what side effects do you have when I'm working with you?

While a relying entirely on a script is a big no, having a verbatim, examples and notes for case studies and projects that you have worked on is rather beneficial. Make sure you don't keep holding to your physical notes and keep staring at the same every now and then though, keep it organic as a conversation.

In the beginning of my coaching, I really liked coaching on the phone because I can put out all the necessary materials/methods/sample questions to use them in the moment. The other person can't see them however, it was like an extended memory to me and I could use them instantly. By this I mean that you can prepare all optional information that might be relevant in the conversation and have it immediately to hand, rather searching for them. This also helps to stay focused in the conversation instead of searching for information an being distracted.

Distrair-se lendo as mensagens ou olhar para o celular enquanto o outro fala, além de deselegante, demonstra distra??o, falta de comprometimento com aquele momento e com o interlocutor. I like the turn of phrase, he who asks leads. However, before finding good questions it is always helpful to have a clear and good understanding of what is your goal in general and specifically for the call/meeting. What do you want to accomplish in the call, what should be different after the call. Now; prepare open ended questions, even if you don't use them in a planned call. It just helps you to get better over time in asking good questions on the fly. Think about questions that would be contra productive. Doesn't mean to use them but the open up for new questions and thoughts. (that's the trick). You might want to use them as hypothetical questions and see what happens. This gives you a kick-start into your next meeting!

But as this is out of control for an interviewee, suggest have a relaxed mind before getting into an interview. It helps the reflex to perform well. One thing that worked many times (my experience as a coach and feedbacks recieved there after) is being your authentic self. Share true contextual experiences in form of short stories in response to all questions. So have your stories ready else they will fizzle out. Play them aptly. For virtual interviews be on screen, look fresh, have crisp and short answers. Sharpen and pace conversation. Self groom to be successful.

Based on my experience it is important to spend a good amount of time into cohesiveness. Years back, I had team members in 5 different locations. I introduced a weekly gossiping hour, right before the official project call. In the g-session, we talked about: - what's going on at your location? I remember, one location was planned to be closed and the member there didn't feel very well. The team supported him during this time. - what's going on in your board area? We had for each board area a representative and it was fascinating what they told about corp. communicated facts. Each of the board area ticked differently and interpreted the message differently. - what is your personal situation? This created more team bonding and understanding.

I think during a phone meeting to be effective is quite important to keep eye "virtual contact" with the attendee-s, thus keeping camera on and looking into it. Starting the discussion with an unrelevant topic like weather forecast or sports can help breaking the ice and keep the atmosphere unformal if this is the first time we talk to each other.
