It depends what time does. If the time changes the items one is monitoring, or characteristics of people, then it should definitely be noted. I am somewhat skeptical of the typical de-seasonalizing methods, like X-13 ARIMA and the like, because they are not telling you what is happening to cause the changes. They just remove them. If changes are a function of cooling degree-days, put cooling degree-days into the model.

Appropriate gaping in time while collecting new data will be helpful but measurement of this gap can be understood only if you have some previous data plus expertise in the field. Introducing this time gap is required only if your research objective wants you to collect time variant data for example; stock prices or weather data. On the other hand, if you have time invariant data such as distance between cities, gender, etc. then you do not need to introduce time gap.

2 How to measure time

One way to account for time in your experimental design is to measure it as a variable, either as an independent variable, a dependent variable, or a covariate. Measuring time as an independent variable means that you manipulate or vary the time of exposure, intervention, or observation for your participants or units. Measuring time as a dependent variable means that you observe or record the time it takes for your participants or units to achieve a certain outcome or response. Measuring time as a covariate means that you control or adjust for the effects of time on your outcome or response, by using statistical methods such as regression or ANOVA.

Time can be included in our models as an independent variable, dependent variable or covariable. However, let me focus on including time as an independent variable for now. If we proceed with this approach, we can use the data to observe trends over time, capture monthly, weekly, quarterly seasonality etc. Even if the causal relationship of other independent variables and dependent variable changes over time, introduction of time as independent variable can control the impact of time. For example regression coefficient of price (independent variable), with revenue is the dependent variable, is calculated by the algorithm considering time is fixed, assuming time is an independent variable in the regression model.

3 How to design time

Another way to account for time in your experimental design is to design it as a factor, either as a within-subjects factor, a between-subjects factor, or a mixed factor. Designing time as a within-subjects factor means that you measure the same participants or units at different points in time, such as before and after an intervention, or at regular intervals. Designing time as a between-subjects factor means that you assign different participants or units to different time groups, such as early and late intervention, or short and long duration. Designing time as a mixed factor means that you combine both within-subjects and between-subjects factors, such as measuring the same participants at different time points, and comparing them with different groups of participants.

Experimental designs that involve time as a variable or a factor come in many forms, including the pretest-posttest design which measures the same participants or units before and after an intervention, the repeated measures design which assesses changes in the outcome over time, the longitudinal design which evaluates long-term effects of an intervention or condition, the cross-sectional design which looks at differences in the outcome across groups or categories, the quasi-experimental design which examines effects of an intervention without random assignment or control group, and the factorial design which considers main effects and interactions of various factors.

Care should be taken when considering time as a variable to account for i.e. seasonability or learning effects, versus treating time to make a statement about causation. RCTs, when designed properly, provide a statement about the causality of a treatment. However, time is not explicitly treated as a variable.

5 How to analyze time

To properly account for time in your experimental design, you must select the appropriate statistical methods and tools for analysis. Depending on the type of design, data, and research question, some of the most common methods and tools are T-test, ANOVA, regression, mixed models, and survival analysis. T-test compares the means of two groups or two time points to evaluate the significance of the difference. ANOVA evaluates the difference and variance between more than two groups or time points. Regression models the relationship between one or more independent variables, such as time, and a dependent variable. Mixed models model this relationship while accounting for the random effects of participants or units. Lastly, survival analysis models the time until an event occurs to assess its probability and risk.
