By matching tasks to the volunteers' abilities and aspirations, you can boost their engagement and productivity

Do a complete map or plan of the project and list all the needs and requirements. Hold a meeting of everyone to plan and assign.

This is where I try to use visuals. Even a simple graphic can provide a good explanation and inspire conversation. That, along with clear instruction on the volunteer role makes it easy for people to understand why they are being called upon to act. Volunteer buy-in can be an effective tool for getting a job from start to finish.

Then with shared ownership of a vision they can play their part and the managers job is often to allow that valued and motivated volunteer to do their thing. When the right people are in their area of passion then beautiful things can happen without a lot of "work"!

An open door policy is crucial. Occasional drop ins, as well as planned periodic meetings, are absolutely necessary. Don't let things fester, be positive as well as firm.

Study and know your people. Different people like to be thanked in different ways. Maybe it's a gift, maybe it's public recognition or maybe it's taking them out for a coffee or time for a walk. It may be a combination of things but different people will feel appreciated in different ways. Don't paint everyone with the same brush.

I measure success through the types of situations, questions or challenges that took place during the event. If I had a lot of issues arise, then I know I did not do my job well. Empowering volunteers to do the work and where appropriate troubleshoot any issues is the ultimate success. Remember lay out the desired results and let them do the rest, they just might have a better way of getting things done!

When you ask for feedback, take it with good grace. Learn from what they tell you and understand why. Allow the team to take responsibility for what is assigned

Continue to let the vision guide your steps so that you are headed in a clear direction. Different volunteers want different things. Some can offer 20 hours/week while others can only do a 3 hour shift/month. Allow for each uniqueness that each person brings. Celebrate your people often and care for them. Finally, if there are people in the organization that drag things down confront the issues or people and if things can't be worked out then find a gracious way to part ways. Cancers are infectious and spread so take care of them quickly.
