Based on my experience in both defensive and offensive security employee awareness and training are necessary but far from sufficient. Also, they are most the time incomplete. Awareness covers some basics but does not mention the most advanced scenarii. And even in that case, if you combine multiple targets, advanced phishing, and cutting edge initial vector malware, you have to assume the company is going to get hit at one point. That is why my take here is awareness is a first line of defense but the company has to assume it will fail, such as it has to assume breach, and implement other defense to reduce the impact of that breach.

In short: Awareness objecive is to reduce the attack surface, not the impact, that's a huge difference and where most companies fails. Even with the best training plan in the world you will limit the surface but that's all ... and when it will not be enough you will be pwned like others, that's the reality.

Be sure to measure the effectiveness of awareness training. This can be done through quizzes, phishing campaigns, etc. If some employees are not successful, then train them specifically on the topics they have not learned. Remember, the chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Any attack does not happen overnight and it will show signals well in advance. It's the SOC team's and end point security tool's job - if there is a full coverage of end users security brought under monitoring/ detection and automated or manual response scope. Secondly, close attention and how fast remedial actions can take place towards prevention, if automated response not possible, matters. Here coordination, faster issue understanding and spot approvals becomes vital. Limiting users not to do certain actions if policy allows that even after content filtering in place is big expectations For example - User may download a PDF file but it's beyond control of users if there is payload in that file? Awareness here may hardly help.
