One of the challenges for cybersecurity and teamwork is the trust built in the team. I often see when a high level of trust is built on a team, guards come down and protocols are dropped. This can have devastating effects but can be deadly when it comes to cybersecurity. Imagine a team member or manager you work with on a daily basis sends you a link. It's nothing out of the norm since you often send links to articles and documents to collaborate. That link asked you to verify your email credentials, also nothing out of the ordinary. However, nothing happens after that. This is often the start of Business Email Compromise (BEC). Hackers look to leverage the social aspects of humans against us. Follow protocols. Trust but verify.

Despite its benefits, teamwork can introduce specific challenges. Conflicts and misunderstandings may arise due to differing opinions, which can divert focus from securing information. The risk exposure increases as more individuals access sensitive data, potentially leading to leaks or unauthorized access. Additionally, effective teamwork in security requires significant coordination, which can be incredibly challenging in larger teams or cross-team collaborations.

Important challenges are 1. Keeping a safe and open work culture. A toxic environment demotivate people from achieving common goals making them more vulnerable. 2. Having good conflicts. It is important to ensure that ideas thrive in an healthy competition. Conflicting ideas and opinions are fundamental to learn from each other and sustain the creation of knowledge capital. 3. Keeping people motivated. Lack of motivation does depreciates human capital and increases the surface of risk exposure.

Addressing these challenges involves implementing several best practices. It's crucial to define clear roles and responsibilities specific to security to prevent confusion and ensure comprehensive coverage of security needs. Establishing open and efficient communication channels is also essential for promptly sharing insights and reporting threats. Regularly reviewing and updating security policies and tailoring controls to the team's needs ensures compliance and up-to-date security measures.

Remember that it isn't just security professionals that are part of team work. Diversity and inclusion means brining other individuals to discussions like business or missions owners, finance people, human resources, etc. Security is a support mechanism to make sure a business or missions can succeed

Security is a profession similarly like doctors, pharmacists, and lawyers. What you currently know isn't going to be enough. This industry constantly changes due to adversaries and new technology.

A lot of this is under the assumption that the team has inclusion and diversity (not taking about representation). The team must be open minded for diversity of thought to even have a chance. The end goal of diversity is innovation. If you don't have any open minded individuals, it won't matter what each team member brings to the table. In security, we have to be open minded, inclusive, and allow diversity to be innovative and cover all our basis. No one knows every aspect of security. Also don't shove diversity and inclusion down people's throats. The leader needs to be aware of diversity and inclusion of the team. Meaning everyone's opinion should be considered. Do not fall into the pitfall that diversity means representation.
