How can students learn to avoid plagiarism?

One thing I realized, as a school librarian, is that most students don't know exactly what constitutes plagiarism and its consequences. This is why it is important (as I do) to teach them to be media and information literate so as to be able to access, evaluate interpret, and use information in all forms ethically and responsibly.

Plagiarism happens when students do not feel authentic in conveying their own ideas. It is very easy to take a statement from an online source and try to paraphrase it without success. Artificial intelligence can further undermine confidence by suggesting a machine programmer with grammar and spelling rules can help students make the grade. As a librarian I work with students to exercise synthesizing skills. I do not discourage AI use, but I try to offer scaffolding for building self-confidence in the student expressing authentic voice on all projects.

Leaning into the new world of AI will present challenges for educators if the correct steps are not taken to teach our children how to use these tools appropriately. Plagiarism must also be explicitly taught to help our students understand that copying someone else's work is illegal. Instead, offering ideas on how to use AI to enhance their personal writing is the positive direction we must move in within the writing world.

Teachers need to explicitly model correct academic use. How many times do teachers hand out photocopies from sources with no attribution? how many times do we present information without citing evidence or sources? If we do it- why can't they? Every handout and every expository claiming to provide valid data should demonstrate correct academic citations. Make explicit reference to this and encourage them to use your modelling. Correct academic behaviour is a learned skill like any other and deserves to be exemplified in teacher practice and explicitly taught.

If one copies something and has no clue who the person or person's pictured in the video is, or what happened to them, one has denied that person or people the empathy they most likely deserve, or the credit they deserve if they did something noteworthy.

Consider having a refined search on your area of expertise so as to get up to date and timely information. Also check on your spelling and tenses when presenting your research work. This puts you ahead of the game.

Be careful of how you use AI. Chat GPT does not reference its work. If it’s not your idea, and you don’t know where it comes from, don’t use it. Or say you’ve used ChatGPT.

It is unethical to use information as if it's your own. This comes down to stealing. If your time is limited make use of a private consultant to research your content.
