How can Structural Engineers gain problem-solving experience?

Structural engineers can learn effective and practical problem solving skills by working on site and learning the prospective of seasoned skilled workers and contractors. This will allow for a greater appreciation of how things get put together and allow for a holistic solution instead of a purely technical solution.

The most active and engaging learning experience would be from your colleagues. If you have not faced a particular problem you may not always be able to solve it efficiently. Here comes the importance of experience. If you don't have experience take it from others who have it. Simple. Even if s(he) is a fresher s(he) is carrying some knowledge/expertise/idea that can help in solving a real life problem. Journals, books, videos, blogs are definitely very rich source of learning, when required.

A Structural Engineer could gain problem-solving experience by having better understanding of the situation and comprehensive knowledge to address the problems to have long term sustainable engineering solutions. It is very important to have practical knowledge along with theoretical knowledge by doing co-op and internships or related volunteer works.

Attend industry events, conferences, and seminars to connect with other professionals and participate in networking opportunities to build relationships and exchange ideas with peers in the field.

Although we often study structural engineering problems theoretically in classes, the best way to get a full understanding of them is to actually experience them in the real world and have to solve them. There often isn't one "correct" or obvious solution, but pros and cons to various solutions. Depending on the situation, for a new type of problem, getting the input from someone who has solved the problem before and/or discussing the pros and cons of various solutions with peers may be very helpful. Implementing specific solutions and understanding the pros and cons of them will also provide valuable lessons.

Familiarize yourself with industry-standard structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, or ANSYS and use these tools to model and analyze structures, ensuring that your designs comply with safety and performance standards.

If we stick to basics of structural engineering we can think innovative. Examples: If we want to design a steel member carrying heavy torsion, we should first think of which section can take torsion efficiently. The answer is circular shape member. If we try with other shapes, it will not give efficiently design. Innovative ideas sometimes cost more but if it is proven to be most efficiently done, engineer should implement it.

One approach to improve problem solving skills is to iterate an initial idea or hypothesis. This enables the continual progression of a design and opens the door for experimentation and innovation.

Exposure is the best teacher. The more you are involved in problem-solving, the better equipped you will be at dealing and solving problems. Volunteer and ask your supervisor to involve you in items that require problem- solving.

Seek out mentors and expand your network. Listen to their experiences and take-aways. This both practices your communication and expands your knowledge. Like others have said, get your repetitions in and you will improve.
