How can storytelling promote engagement and retention in professional development?

Storytelling can make a real difference in professional development. It creates an emotional connection that helps people feel invested in the content, provides a practical context for learning, and stimulates critical thinking. By incorporating stories, you can simplify complex concepts and foster collaboration while evoking emotions that make the learning experience more memorable. Careful planning and consideration of the audience are key to creating an engaging and inspirational learning experience.

In my experience, adding one’s personal narrative through storytelling does so much more than conveying simple facts, it adds perspective and real world examples that can propel ideas while provoking higher level thought.

Storytelling is the biggest tool that helped us to survive against all odds. As a species, homo sapiens were not one of the strongest but they did survive by sticking together and collaborating. Collaboration was possible because they all believed in common stories. Later on the people intra species continued the trend and formed religion, countries and families using the same tool, storytelling and survived or thrived under all diverse conditions.

Storytelling is a great way to share experiences, deliver information,tap into the innate human desire,and create a more engaging and memorable learning experience which has the power to influence the emotions and behavior. To weave the story telling for better retention, incorporate stories that involve similar to the audience and bring heart to the stories,tap into the power of emotion,create long lasting engagement with the content and create a sense of connection. Use strategic integrated approach,expressive language and details to provide a picture in the minds of the learners.Provide the opportunity for questions,discussions and exercises based on the narratives,illuminate purpose in work and make believe in the power of storytelling.

Story telling has the power of retention. People remember the story someone told them at some point and then they pass it on- sometimes as is and sometimes with a personal flavor! We are all story tellers. Before any written formats, story telling was purely reliant on oral storytelling culture, communities came together through storytelling, moral compasses were created and established as laws through versions of stories passed on by generations. An incredibly powerful tool has the potential to transform the world, encourage critical thinking among young populations, offer newer perspectives to the older generations. People come and go but stories remain…

Humans are wired for connection. Telling a story offers an opening for others to emotionally relate to a topic. When we relate to a topic, we lean in and want to learn more.

Once upon a time… (Or if you prefer, on the 9th of January 2024) there is a 92 year old woman who lives on her own in a forest, in a house full of books that she designed herself. She is still minding her adult children and her grandson. She loves reading, watching the news, telling and listening to stories. Whether through books, films or liveness, literature can be your greatest teacher and friend. Maybe it can help you develop in your professional life but far more importantly than that, whether Dickens or Barbie, stories can give us empathic insight so we might become more compassionate and caring like that 92 year old woman. My mother. And maybe we will live more happily ever after. (Or at least with less conflict worldwide) The End.

One thing that I have found helpful is not looking at storytelling in PD as just a tool; instead, embracing it as a bridge connecting theory to reality. It engages by turning abstract concepts into real-world, relatable concepts, which translate into concrete learning opportunities. Stories ignite curiosity, create emotional resonance, and foster empathy, leading to deeper understanding and retention. A good story and a good storyteller allow educators to see themselves in the story, understanding not just the 'what' but the 'why' of their professional journey. By reflecting on their experiences in the stories told, educators are not just passive recipients but active participants, ready to transfer these insights into their practice.

Storytelling in PD sessions helps in connecting the dots about their experiences, imaginations and experiences which will enhance their enthusiasm and give them an understanding about their skillsets. Taking a cue with the experiences and happenings described by experts helps them in enriching their knowledge and understanding which are very essential in taking meaningful decisions. These helps them in achieving excellence and achieve success with the desired results.

Our brains love stories, caring more about what a character feels or thinks than mere order of events. Our brains paint pictures, connecting with the emotions and scenes. This mental imagery boost is like a superpower for remembering things better. So, storytelling is a dynamic tool that doesn't just grab attention; it plants memories, shaping the way we learn and grow. As Simon Sinek wisely puts it, 'People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it'. This perfectly aligns with the concept that effective storytelling means conveying the purpose, nurturing emotional connections & building trust - all essential elements for successful communication and engagement in PD.

The best stories are unique to personal experiences. I become passionate and animated when I am telling my story. One personal story can have multiple relevant moments. I choose the moment and lean into it. I can use the same story to share my experience with conflict, collaborative work, leadership, or collegiality. All stories are fair game; sometimes, thinking about an experience from a different perspective leads to a new story. No story is useless; all stories are ripe for sharing. I have told stories not my own or recounted narratives I've heard or read. If these borrowed stories are impactful for me, they will impact the listener. Just be honest about stories that may not be one's own.

Storytelling in professional development promotes engagement and retention by captivating attention, creating emotional connections, providing contextual learning, improving memory retention, and delivering content in an engaging manner. It captures learners' attention, evokes emotions, helps learners understand and relate to the content, improves memory retention, and keeps learners engaged and motivated.

When I think of storytelling in PD, using multiple strategies comes to mind along with the saying "show don't tell." For example, an introduction should link experience and the facilitators journey to this point and if they solved a similar problem to that of the audience. Using images and data to paint a positive picture to reflect that the time the audience is investing in PD will have ROI. Sharing other customer anecdotes and success stories from previous PD participants. Always facilitating and building background knowledge through shared and similar experiences builds credibility and engages the audience. Telling stories connects the dots so the learner can expand upon the ideas and apply it to their own context.

If your PD is asynchronous, record a video with your phone of you telling your story in an authentic setting — backyard, at the park in a baseball cap, walking your dog, etc. The context deeply informs the way a viewer responds to the story. So don’t miss that opportunity. Verbal and non-verbal cues are what the emotional brain craves!

Storytelling in PD’s must be objective oriented. Time and content play a crucial role when it comes to storytelling. An engagement factor must be present with a very clear context highlighting the climax and the solution as well as relating it to the main objective of the PD.

This very much depends on context, audience and objective, but my general guidelines are: keep it simple and know your content, give something for everyone / be inclusive, pithy with purpose is always paramount.

Stories are powerful in explaining abstract concepts, especially in connecting to real-life experiences. On that note, let me share a (short and sweet) story about 'student centered approach' told during PD sessions in the past. When I was a classroom teacher, despite my fear of creepy crawlies, I encouraged students to explore praying mantis, caterpillars and harmless spiders. My fear shouldn't deprive them of learning based on their interests! I have been told by trainees that this story stuck to their minds.

The simplest strategy- Do not tell-all ! Lead your audience along the path taking care that you tickle their emotions and imagination along the way. For eg - if you are selling. Present the plot , the characters and the conflict. Ask them for their perspective on the resolution. Or Present the plot and the characters. Ask the audience to nail the conflict. Such strategies ensure that your audience partakes in the story that you are building up.

I believe that talking about a very challenging period of your work and your attitudes towards that challenge, the techniques, methods, ways, and plans you used to solve it, your patience, and your faith in success could be a very good example of storytelling. People usually want to hear stories that end with either happy or successful endings rather than incomplete ones. You might have tonnes of stories to share with people; however, in order to impress people and share your journey, I reckon that it is important that you share a very good story.

One of the strategies I have used includes storytelling in my PG classes. When I have a detective or crime story such as that of Agatha Christie or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes), I tell the story to my students, presenting it as the author has done. I leave clues in front of them and ask them to solve the case. This enables the students to think on their own rather than just rely on the summary of the stories. The feedback I get and the enthusiasm shown by the students in class hone my skills of imagination. The students are encouraged to work in pairs or as teams. So, they are like sleuths stalking their prey, their skills of imagination, intelligence, leadership, and teamwork being polished.

Storytelling can be an authentic way of demonstrating empathy and showing one’s real self. Sharing real experiences often shows personal courage as it can show one’s vulnerability but often leads to the ability to build strong trusted relationships with people like oneself.

One thing I have found helpful is Storytelling through data: Instead of simply presenting dry statistics, weave data into a narrative that highlights patterns, challenges, and successes. For example, tell the story of a school that struggled with low reading scores until they implemented a targeted intervention program. Track the progress of individual students as well as the overall improvement in school-wide reading data. This personalizes the data and makes it more meaningful for participants.

Conducting a live class is in itself storytelling especially if it is a History lesson. Enacting portions not only make your class lively but help students to retain the lesson much better. Storytelling takes the characters out of the book and bring them in flesh and blood to the class. One must try it to witness the happiness!

When you're trying to explain a concept or idea that is abstract, storytelling is a great way to build connections. People like to feel connected with ideas. Storytelling is a great way of making ideas more relatable.

When considering the appropriateness of story telling in your professional context, consider if anecdotal examples carry the same weight as empirical data. Consider your audience. Does the audience lend itself to an openness to emotional connection?

Ensure that the stories align with the learning objectives and are relevant to the professional context. Encourage audience participation by incorporating interactive elements within the storytelling process. Include a variety of stories to cater to different learning styles and backgrounds to ensure diversity in participants. Craft stories that evoke emotions to enhance retention and engagement. Emotional connections make the content more memorable. Keep stories concise and focused, avoiding unnecessary details that may distract from the main message.

Through narratives, marginalised voices can empower themselves and signpost success for others. ?? Narrating the lived experiences of our school cultivates connections. At our school, sharing our stories has been key in growing our school community. Just as we connect with stories in our private lives, these narratives create a sense of affinity within our school community. ??Diversity matters in storytelling. Multiple perspectives ensure a more inclusive narrative, as single stories may unintentionally exclude. Share the story of your school and your experience to cultivate a vibrant and united community.

Everyone likes stories, if narrated with skill one never forgets the theme or values shared through the narrative. We must keep in mind few key factors...relevance of the story, the context in which the connection is made, and the real world application of the narrative. The narrator has to be well prepared so that any twist in the narration one can make based on the situation and audience. True life incidents too make good stories as well as oral History.
