As mentioned, I like and recommend my mentees to use the STAR template. It helps to build a story from the beginning to the end very easily. S = what was the situation you were in T = what task you were in charge of A = what was the action you took R = what was the outcome

I always advise my clients to work with the well-known "Hero's journey" structure. We're used to recognizing the hero's journey in fiction, but it's almost always at the basis of any personal story of an entrepreneur that we can think of. The hero's journey requires some thought and diving deep into the challenges you've overcome, the mentors you've encountered and the path you've walked and I promise it's worth it. People connect better with individuals whose stories they can relate to and whose struggles and dreams they understand.

As a career coach, I often encourage individuals to use this method to craft compelling narratives that leave a lasting impression.

As others have mentioned, the STAR method is an invaluable tool. One piece of advice I want to add here is that if you’re going to use this method, make sure to really lean into the A (action piece). When I coach students to prepare them for interviews I find this is the main piece they miss. When you’re asked to “tell me about a time when…” or given an opportunity to give an example of your experience or skills, it’s easy to set up the scenario and then just say “and it all worked out.” Don’t miss the opportunity to talk about HOW you reached a positive outcome. Really go into detail about what specific steps or strategies or skills went into the process. This tells the listener exactly what you are capable of!

The STAR method is a structured approach to professional storytelling that we use extensively when drafting candidate applications. One area that I see candidates often neglect is the R in STAR. Clearly articulating and elaborating on results strengthens your story by showing the impact of what you did and the contribution you made. Think about the immediate result, then push yourself to consider the bigger impact of your contribution. What did this result mean for the team overall? For the department? For the company? What was the long term impact of your contribution?

Start developing your Personal Brand by getting feedback from the people you deal everyday and once in a while. If you confidence, ask to your boss, colleagues and clients, to check out if they see what you think you are showing out. From these feedbacks you can identify or corroborate your strengths, weaknesses, development opportunities, and also if your communication style fits to your audience.

Designing and communicating your personal brand is not very different from designing and communicating an organisational commercial brand. Something I use with my clients is the 7 elements from "Primal Branding" (a must-read for anyone who wants to build a commercial or individual brand!); 1. Creation story (build a wholesome story about yourself); 2. Leader (obviously you are the leader, define yourself as a professional clearly); 3. Icons (visual representation); 4. Rituals (what habitual practices set you apart?) 5. Pagans (Who doesn't believe in you? Use them to define yourself as a professional!) 6. Sacred words (think of a unique language that people will relate to you later); 7. Creed (your values and goals).

When I am coaching someone, I highly encourage them to think deeply about their personal brand. Defining these elements and ensuring they align with your career goals can help you establish a strong, authentic, and memorable presence in your professional sphere. Your personal brand not only sets the stage for building a successful career but also allows you to leave a lasting impression that differentiates you from others.

Prioritize your large task into smaller, manageable sub-task... Here is the key mantra " bite by bite you can eat the whole cake"

Explain the reasons behind these shifts, emphasize the skills acquired or transferred, and highlight the impact you've made. Use the STAR method to illustrate your ability to adapt to new roles and emphasize the positive outcomes, such as new connections, insights, or opportunities, gained from your transitions.

Often candidates brush over career transitions simply because they don't know how to present them in a way that will make sense to someone else. A transition might be for practical reasons - becoming a parent, moving interstate or changing industries for a better salary. But these reasons aren't necessarily the best way to present the transition. Think about what you gained professionally through the transition, and focus on that. It might be new industry specific skills, technical skills, soft skills, broader experience, or a new perspective. Focus on what has been gained by the transition and frame the change accordingly.

Transitioning your career can be challenging but rewarding process. Remember, transitioning your career is a journey that requires patience and persistence. Stay determined, keep leaning and leverage you existing skills and experience to make a successful transition... Here is the key mantra " Don't follow the crowd, they are already alone"
