How can Social Workers find new career paths that align with their values?

Social work is incredibly broad - the beauty and burden of the profession is how broad it is. If you so choose to fully embrace the values and mission of Social work, the skill sets that you learn can truly help you to connect with and understand human and social interactions, needs, and challenges, and assess those on a much deeper and intimate level. Because of this, we're able to identify our strengths and areas of limitations. This can be incredibly helpful when seeking to pursue opportunities and exploring your passions. As much as it is important to understand what you like, it is equally important to understand what you don't so that you can find opportunities that align with your skills, interests, & values.

In my hands-on experience as a social worker, I once had a client who inspired me to think creatively about this question. ???? My client, was struggling to find a career that resonated with her deep compassion for animals. We explored her strengths, and I introduced her to volunteering opportunities at a local animal shelter. ???? The transformative power of this experience not only allowed her to align her values with her career but also enriched her life in unexpected ways. Sarah discovered her passion for animal welfare and eventually pursued a fulfilling career in veterinary social work! ????

Explore potential options that align with strengths and interests by perusing online job boards, career websites, and relevant professional associations. Networking with social workers who have successfully transitioned or hold diverse roles provides valuable insights. Attend webinars, workshops, or events showcasing varied career opportunities, gaining crucial understanding. For example, those passionate about social change may find a fit as policy analysts, while those focused on education and youth empowerment may thrive as school counselors. This research-driven approach empowers social workers to discover fulfilling career paths resonating with their values.

I recently just learned to add data to this. Instead of using keywords use numbers. Show what I’ve actually done. I’ve always been told to you key words but that has never worked. People wanna see action even on a resume in 10 seconds.

When exploring new career paths, consider that social work is incredibly diverse and not limited to clinical or individual practice. Social workers can work in ANY sector, industry, or market, on ANY social, economic, or political issue, and with ANY population. To make this more concrete, I created an infographic series with job titles that social workers can hold with varying levels of experience and without a social work or other license in 31 different areas. Representation is important, so consider publicly identifying as a social worker or [title] with a social work background to show other social workers what's possible. And no matter how, where, or with whom you practice social work, embrace learning, unlearning, and relearning.
