In my experience, having a goal around building a sense of belonging within an organization is not that interesting. In social work, as well as in many other pursuits, people are often driven by a passion for the outcomes they can deliver. Having a sense of belonging to the organization is a nice add-on, but it's not so important. A better goal is to create a deep sense of ownership in the work and the outcomes in each person. The beauty of pursuing a deep sense of ownership is that psychology has studied it in useful ways. If people can find the identity they want, the meaning they cherish, and kinship with the people they serve, then they develop a deep sense of ownership. That deep sense of ownership drives commitment and productivity.
