How can social impact measurement help identify collaboration opportunities?

Improve conflict resolution by practicing active listening, developing empathy, honing communication, and boosting emotional intelligence. Embrace cultural sensitivity, consider mediation training, attend workshops, seek feedback, and reflect on experiences. Co-creation is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal to bridge divides and foster shared ownership. Through my work, I've helped a number of organizations co-design impact frameworks - often through workshops, virtual or in-person - with various branches of their organization, partners, and grantees. Although each stakeholder may have metrics or indicators of primary importance to them, collaboratively identifying a series of outcomes and indicators of relevance to the collaborative initiative as a whole can help the group understand one another's needs, priorities, and capacities and facilitate the creation of a shared story of impact!

Finding common ground when measuring social impact can make it easier to work with other organizations, but it can also limit the creativity and variety of approaches to measuring impact. Thus, it is important to find a balance between standardization and flexibility when measuring social impact. Organizations should strive to use commonly accepted frameworks while also allowing some flexibility to adapt their approaches to specific situations and needs. By striking this balance, organizations can reap the benefits of collaboration while still maintaining the creativity and diversity that are essential for effective social impact measurement.

Impact stories are important since they let potential collaborators know the work you have done. For example, in organising neurodiversity events, impact stories from participants, parents, employers are shared. Now, these stories can be publicised to try to attract (1) people who may be hesitant to get support due to the stigma surrounding neurodiversity and (2) donors who may wish to advocate neurodiversity in their communities such as ethnic minorities. The story content obviously needs to be modified, but the story is the everything.

Behind every impact story lies the efforts, dedication, sweat and tears of the team. As we share our narratives of transformation, we not only showcase achievements but invite others to be part of a collective narrative, where each initiative/project is executed with compassion and positive change.

Social media platforms have made it easier to share impact stories, but these platforms are sometimes underutilized by social impact professionals to communicate their success stories to the world. I believe, with fair knowledge of storytelling, impact stories can be shared most compellingly.

People connect with and remember stories much more than random data points. The key is to wear a compelling narrative that takes listeners through a journey to understanding the problem, and your organization's unique solution, why this matters in your context and what you have achieved. Weaving in concrete data on reach or changes over time as well as quotes from people′s experiences to humanize social impact shifts can be incredibly helpful. Thinking of creative and visual ways to communicate change can also leave a lasting impression. When we mention stakeholders within the social impact space, our minds rush to the external people, forgetting to place some importance on the people within the organization leading engagements. They are as important stakeholders as the external stakeholders. This is advocacy for priorities to be placed on team members, volunteers, board members, etc. as important impact stakeholders in every organizations.

Data is the best source to uniquely identify current caps and opportunities. Digging into available data can be a rich source of finding areas of untapped potential, and thus, collaboration. Once you’ve had time to analyze your data, also do some research to see if there are organizations or individuals that can help you solve for problems identified. This makes the work stronger and more likely to be successful.

Your impact data is more than just numbers; it represents the lives we've touched. When we dig into the stories behind the numbers, we discover the real human impact. This emotional connection helps us identify where collaboration can be a game-changer, turning data into a force that makes a positive difference.

Such variety can help all network members to be exposed to different expertise, helping to make social impact spread and easily communicated to different parties.
